Watch Warwick Davis in Previously Unreleased Mockumentary-Style STAR WARS Film RETURN OF THE EWOK
Fans have their pick of Star Wars movies and films to watch these days, and even have new projects to look forward to. But back in the days when the first films were being released, fans were starved for content! After seeing a movie in the theaters, you had to wait several months to a year for the film to be available to rent at the video store, and even longer to buy it most of the time.
The original trilogy movies were each released three years apart, and for fans nowadays who are getting Marvel movies a few times a year, that seems like a ridiculously long time! Beside the three originals, the only other content fans got was the crappy Christmas special, which aired once, and never again because it was SO bad, and two Ewok TV movies. But as it turns out, there was actually another short mockumentary-style film that was made all about Warwick Davis' audition process for the film.
Davis, also known for playing Willow in the 1988 film and Professor Flitwick in the Harry Potter franchise, started out in Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi as Wicket, an Ewok.
The previously unreleased “documentary” titled Return of the Ewok, is available to watch online, but it has been pieced together from official clips released on Starwars.com and footage recorded during festival screenings of the film.
Apparently it has always been a very rough cut, as it was never polished for release, and Davis talked to Uproxx about it in a November 2022 interview, saying:
"I mean, I think the challenge with 'Return of the Ewok' is that so many people gave their time, there are these wonderful cameos in there, [the] crew gave time during lunch hours to make it, and nobody ever signed off on their involvement ... But it really is one of those found in the attic kind of creations, isn't it, in its very raw form? There's unfinished sound, the print is very rough, but I think that's one of the charms of it, really."
It actually is really fun to watch. Davis was only 12 years old when he was cast in Return of the Jedi, so he grew up making these movies, and it really pointed his career in a cool direction. Check it out below, and hopefully it will get remastered one day so everyone can enjoy it and catch all the little things it may be easy to miss.
