Watchers Will Reportedly Appear in AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY and AVENGERS: SECRET WARS
According to a new report from Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will feature “multiple” Watchers, those mysterious, all-seeing cosmic beings introduced in Marvel’s What If...? animated series and hinted at in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
The Watchers are an ancient race sworn to observe the universe without interfering, and they are steeped in Marvel mythology. While Jeffrey Wright’s Uatu has become the face (and voice) of the Watchers in the MCU, Richtman’s scoop suggests he won’t be the only one keeping an eye on the Multiverse’s chaos.
There have been so many rumors surrounding Doomsday and Secret Wars, but we know that Marvel will be pulling out all the stops with the films. With Doomsday likely setting the stage for the creation of Battleworld, which is a patchwork planet stitched together from fragments of the Multiverse, and Secret Wars rumored to reset the MCU, it’s clear Marvel is headed into crazy uncharted territory.
There’s no other information on how the Watchers will be utilized in the story, but we know that Robert Downey Jr. will be introduced as Doctor Doom, who has the potential to be the most dangerous villain the MCU has ever seen.
It’s rumored that he will be gunning for The Beyonder’s powers, which would allow him to reshape reality and establish a new Sacred Timeline. Regardless of what he’s up to, The Watchers are sure to be keeping a close eye on Doom.
In the animated series, What If...?, Wright’s Uatu breaks his oath of non-interference in What If...? to guide the Multiverse’s heroes. Seeing the character step into live-action would be a pretty cool and big moment for the MCU.
If the Watchers do show up in these films, it will be interesting to see if they are they there only to merely observe, or will Doom’s actions force them to intervene? Alos, is Uatu is willing to break his vow again? If so, what consequences might follow?
In Marvel Comics, the Watcher’s vast knowledge and motives have often played an important role in major storylines. They’ve even been involved in controversies surrounding their supposed impartiality.
Whatever Marvel has planned, with cosmic entities like the Watchers possibly be thrown into the mix, that could take the Multiverse Saga into a wild different directions.
