WEAPONS Director Zach Cregger’s DC Movie Title and Plot Details Reportedly Revealed
Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind the twisted horror hit Barbarian and new thriller Weapons, has a DC movie script up his sleeve, and we have some new details.
For a while, rumors suggested Cregger’s mysterious DC project would center on Joker and Harley Quinn. But according to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision newsletter, the movie instead puts the spotlight on Gotham City’s lesser-known criminal world.
The project is titled Henchmen and it reportedly follows a low-level goon in Gotham who, thanks to a “stroke of luck,” manages to incapacitate Batman. His unexpected victory quickly earns him a dangerous reputation in the city’s underworld.
While Batman, Joker, and Harley Quinn may appear “briefly,” the heart of the story is about the criminal nobody who suddenly becomes a somebody. I love this concept! This sounds like such a cool interesting story!
There are some big roadblocks before Henchmen could actually move forward, though. James Gunn and Peter Safran have yet to cast Batman, Joker, or Harley in their DCU. On top of that, THR notes Gunn and Safran may “be careful” with Batman-related material while Matt Reeves continues building his own The Batman universe.
Cregger himself acknowledged the script in a recent THR interview but stressed that it’s not his immediate priority.
“I have Resident Evil, and then I have a sci-fi movie right after that that’s original,” said Zach Cregger. “And then I have another finished script that I want to do after that. It actually takes place in the DC Universe, but it’s a totally original and it’s not a superhero movie.”
Before he can dive into Henchmen, Cregger will helm his adaptation of Resident Evil, followed by an original sci-fi project. Only after those does the DC crime tale get its shot, but given the story concept, fans of gritty Gotham stories should keep a close eye on this one.
