WEAPONS Prequel GLADYS Moves Forward as GODZILLA Writer Joins the Creative Team

Horror fans who couldn’t shake the nightmare fuel of Aunt Gladys in Weapons are about to get exactly what they’ve been hoping for. The upcoming prequel, currently titled Gladys, just took a big step forward, and it’s bringing in some serious genre firepower to make sure this story hits hard.

Weapons director Zach Cregger is officially co-writing the script with Zach Shields, a name that’ll instantly click for Monsterverse fans. Shields worked on Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and more recently produced Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Now he’s stepping into the eerie world of Aunt Gladys.

The prequel will center on what many agree was one of the best parts of Weapons, Amy Madigan’s wildly unsettling Aunt Gladys. Her performance clearly left a mark, and it didn’t go unnoticed either. Madigan just scored the Best Supporting Actress win at the 2026 Oscars for the role.

When teasing the spinoff film, Cregger previously shared, "I was ready. I had it kind of in my pocket before the movie came out."

Details about the plot are still locked up tight, but if you’ve seen Weapons, you know there’s a lot to explore. Aunt Gladys arrives in that film fully formed and terrifying, with the ability to manipulate an entire town into carrying out her violent will. The film barely scratches the surface of where those powers came from or what’s really driving her.

That leaves the door wide open. This prequel could dig into her origins, the first time she realized what she could do, or even the sinister roots of that disturbing tree tied to her presence. There’s a lot of dark mythology sitting there waiting to be unpacked.

With Zach Cregger already dialed into this twisted world and Zach Shields bringing his experience with large-scale, creature-driven storytelling, Gladys has the potential to deepen the horror in a way that makes Aunt Gladys even more disturbing the next time we see her.

No release date yet, but things are clearly moving. If this movie leans even further into what made Aunt Gladys so creepy in Weapons, we’re in for something seriously haunting.
