WEDNESDAY Creators Are Bringing THE ADDAMS FAMILY Back to the Big Screen With a New Animated Movie
Fans of Wednesday are about to get even more spooky fun from the minds that brought Netflix’s hit series to life. Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the creative duo behind the show, have revealed that they’re working on a brand new Addams Family animated movie, and it’s not a Netflix project.
The news comes just after Wednesday Season 2 Part 1 premiered on the streamer, and while Netflix is already moving forward with Season 3, this animated movie is taking a completely different path. Instead of streaming, it’s headed to theaters as part of a partnership with Amazon MGM.
Gough shared on Deadline’s Crew Call podcast: “We’re working on it with Amazon MGM and with Kevin Miserocchi, who runs the Addams Foundation, he knew Charles Addams and the keeper of the Addams flame, and with Gail Berman and John Glickman. We’re rebooting the animated film franchise.”
This new take will stand on its own, separate from the Netflix series and past films. As Gough explained, “It won’t have anything to do with the two films before it, nor is it connected with this show. It will be a brand new Addams feature. There’s not really much we can say about it, because it’s in the very early stages.”
The film will reboot the Addams Family animated franchise that last hit theaters in 2019 and 2021 with Charlize Theron and Oscar Isaac lending their voices. Unlike those, the new movie aims for a fresh start and a cinematic release.
If that’s not enough Addams weirdness for you, Gough and Millar are also developing a Wednesday spin-off focused on Fred Armisen’s delightfully bizarre Uncle Fester, which will stay under Netflix’s umbrella.
It’s been more than 30 years since Barry Sonnenfeld’s The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993) charmed audiences with their macabre humor, and it looks like the creepy, kooky clan is ready for another big-screen revival.
The only question now is how weird and wonderful this new animated incarnation will get?
