Werner Herzog Explains the Personal Invitation He Received That Lead Him to Join the Cast of THE MANDALORIAN
Academy Award nominated director, writer, producer, actor, and poet Werner Herzog has been a part of so many great movies and shows over the years.
He has lent his iconic voice to many projects, and that may be the thing he’s most well known for, but The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau wanted to make sure to showcase Herzog’s face on camera as well.
While promoting his upcoming his most recent National Geographic documentary Ghost Elephants, Herzog talked to CinemaBlend about his role in the series The Mandalorian way back in season 1, and how it came to be, stating:
“Well, I never competed for that part. I was invited by Jon Favreau, and he wanted to have me, my face visible for many people out there in the world, because he loves my films, and he said people have to see what this man looks like.”
Herzog admitted that he had never seen ANY Star Wars films or shows before taking on this role, but he was incredibly intrigued by the technology used to bring the show to life. He went on to explain:
“I was very much intrigued by these round horizons, where as an actor you do not see a green screen, you see the planet on which you are living, you see the interior of the spacecraft in which you are traveling, and the camera sees it as well.
“Finally, cinema is back where it should be, has been in its beginnings, and should be forever, not green screens, but where you know in which landscape you are moving, where you see it as an actor and as a cinematographer.”
It’s cool that even though he wasn’t familiar with the genre, the filmmaker could connect with the experience through the way it was made. I bet he was fun to have on set. If you want to go back and check out his performance in season 1, The Mandalorian is available to watch on Disney+.
