What If MARVEL Played OVERWATCH Part 1: MCU Heroes
Tony Stark sits on his couch, watching a movie on his 100-Inch holographic projector. Dr. Strange waltzes in and sits next to him to watch too. A few more Avengers come to sit on the large couch, but Spider-Man comes through an open window, yelling, “Guys! We are the best team in the world, what if we took that into the world of gaming?” Confused, everyone starts complaining about being too old for games, but Peter stands up after setting up the PS4 and hooking it up to the projector and says, “oh come on you guys, I got no one else to play with, but I guess I have better reflexes than you, so it would be unfair.” Hearing that, Thor stands up and puts his hand out for a controller.
To continue our journey into the massive depths of speculation and fiction, we will be looking at the main cast (give or take a few) of the MCU and imagining they are playing the proud, team shooter from Blizzard, Overwatch. Let us know what you think of our picks, we are leaning into the style of play, not just the basic ideas of which characters have similar names, body types or superficial stuff like that. I like to think that they would pick these characters based on who they are as superheroes and what they would really pick if they were playing. So let the nerd out begin!
Iron Man - Pharah
No, it isn’t just the flying and armor that brings Iron Man to Pharah. It is really the amount of command and support that Pharah demands while being played. With rockets, a push missile and one of the coolest and most destructive ultimates, I think Iron Man would totally gravitate to Pharah.
Hulk - Reaper
As much as Bruce Banner is very smart and quite the intellect, when it comes to plans, the Hulk is all about running into battle and attacking without end. This is Reaper, self healing, taking down the biggest enemies and causing devastating blows, Hulk would love the claps of those shotguns.
Captain America - Soldier 76
This is more than both being the classic soldiers with loads of patriotism and moral code. Soldier 76 is very balanced between supporting with his heal-nade and dealing damage with his gun, we find Captain is always occupied with the well being of his team along with defeating his enemies.
Spider-Man - Tracer
Quick, confident, energetic? Both Tracer and Spider-Man are these, but let’s look at Tracer’s gameplay. She is always in and out of situations, really good at not taking damage and normally more of a nuisance and distraction instead of a killer. Spider-Man would be used the same way if he was actually in the game, and that’s why he would for sure pick Tracer.
Black Panther - Genji
Humble yet powerful. Black Panther may just be a man, but he is enhanced and packs a serious punch when he needs to. Genji’s ability to do the serious damage and be the noble warrior pairs well with Black Panther’s fighting style along with his acrobatic skills.
Black Widow - Sombra
Yes, I know people would want to have her be Widowmaker, but Black Widow is not a Sniper, long-range isn’t in her vocabulary. But being more subtle and sneaky, using her tools to her best advantage, and doing precise and perfect damage to take down enemies is much more like Sombra and her ability to take down people one at a time.
Antman - Winston
Although the MCU Antman may not be the impressive scientist that Winston is, they do have similar jobs in a fight: get into the middle of things, make a mess and look to your friends to clean up. And, if all goes wrong, get really big and just backhand your enemies like crazy.
Thor - Doomfist
The God of Thunder likes to jump into battle with a weapon in hand, taking down enemies with the power of his hammer. Replace a hammer with a giant metal arm, and you got Doomfist. I also don’t think Thor would ever get tired of punching someone into a wall.
Captain Marvel - Orisa
Seeing Captain America be as much of a protector as a death machine, it reminded me of the power that Orisa has. From being an immovable wall to a killer bullet machine, Orisa matches Captain Marvel’s balance of defense and offense while always being the secret weapon to carry the team to victory.
Vision - Baptiste
Vision cares a lot about his friends, and so it makes sense that he would be support, but don’t write him off about doing very little damage. Seeing Baptiste use his ultimate and throwing out seriously powerful shots, it reminds me of Vision and his battles. Also, Vision is one of the tougher Avengers, so having an immortality field at the ready also fits well.
Scarlet Witch - Bastion
Scarlet Witch may not be the biggest or baddest Avenger, but she is for sure the strongest. And yes, she may get herself into bad situations, but that is what Bastion is all about. While he may not have a great place in Overwatch now, he will tear the enemy to shreds if and when he gets the chance, just like our crimson sorceress.
Dr. Strange - Zenyatta
Master of self? Check. Master of knowledge and balance? Check. Always knowing where everything is and the tides of the battle to predict the outcomes and know when it is best to use which abilities and attacks? Check. Dr. Strange would connect so well with this master of life, battle, and power.
Nick Furry - Zarya
The chief himself, Nick Furry just wants to get the job done. Take hits, hit back harder and win. This no-nonsense attitude seems like a Zarya player. Zarya can take an incredible amount of abuse from enemies and then use it on them to crush them into oblivion.
Hawkguy - Hanzo
Shoots arrows? Yep, and that’s about it. Hawkeye may fit the personalities of other Overwatch characters but sitting in the back, shooting arrows and getting combined attacks ready to kill lots of enemies, that is exactly what Hawkguy has been doing ten years now, and I don’t think a video game would change his desire to hit people in the face with an arrow.
