What Sony Skipping E3 This Year Could Mean
Sony has decided to think out of the gaming industry box again by skipping out of E3 2020. This was a surprising move with PS5 coming out this year, the midlife of the PS4 in play, and a number of huge titles still coming to the PS4 and possibly PS5. But, we have a couple of thoughts on why Sony needs/wants to skip the biggest gaming convention of the year.
1. A New Vision
In GamesIndustry.biz’s conversation with an SIE spokesperson, we see that Sony wants to “ build upon [their] global events strategy in 2020 by participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe. [Their] focus is on making sure fans feel part of the PlayStation family and have access to play [fans’] favorite content.” We can see that Sony is making sure that the Playstation is for the fans, to the fans and with only the fans in mind. Yes, they want new people to be interested too, But I feel that they are looking to market directly and more intimately to the Playstation fans.
2. More Control
Last year, Sony released a number of Playstation “State of Play” videos which gave direct, simple, and straightforward looks at upcoming games. With trailers, gameplay demos, release dates and teases, there was much to be excited for in these videos. Instead of having to invest all that time and money into a presentation, I think Sony wants to focus more time and energy in developing the games instead of making them seem cool during a weeklong event filled with a million other things.
3. The Playstation 5
When it comes down to the bare bones, the next console will play bigger, better, nicer-looking games than ever before. However, Sony seems to have some other ideas about it than we do. I would bet money that they would be hosting their own release event or press release event and debut the Playstation 5 all on its own. I could see them inviting game developers, gaming media outlets, and avid Playstation 5 fans and streamers for an epic event all around the newest member of the Playstation family.
4. Why Bother?
Sony missed E3 last year and does it seem to have hurt them at all. Their sales are still good, and people still are just as hyped for new PS4 games and the new console later this year. Just like Sony always does, they like exclusivity and being on their own because they can and are just as successful.
These are some reasons why we think Sony is going to skip E3 this year. It is pretty crazy still, they’ve been there for years and are now sitting it out, but doing pretty well. What do you guys think? Will you miss them again or will E3 be just as good as previous years? Let us know in the comments!
