When Viggo Mortensen Lost a Tooth Filming THE LORD OF THE RINGS He Asked for Super Glue so He Could Finish Shooting
The Lord of the Rings was an epic trilogy that has lived on as one of the most beloved film trilogies of all time. The movies are so good, but with the size and scale of the story, and the type of story-telling that director Peter Jackson took on, there was a fair share of accidents and injuries on set, and many a story for the actors to go on to tell.
One of the wildest behind the scenes mishaps came during the making of the second film, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. During shooting the most complicated action sequence in the film, and one of the toughest in the trilogy, The Battle of Helm’s Deep, Jackson explained in a 2002 interview that Aragorn actor Viggo Mortensen was the driving force behind what made that scene great:
"[Mortensen] just worked ceaselessly in making that the scene that it was.”
But unfortunately, this was also when Mortensen suffered a terrifying blow to the face:
"One of the things that happened with Viggo in [the Helm's Deep sequence] was there was a moment when one of the Orc swords whacked him in the face. Hit him in the mouth. And his front tooth snapped off at the root. Like literally broke in half and fell on the floor! [Mortsensen] immediately snatched [his tooth] up and said 'Get me some super glue! We've got to stick this back in and carry on.' He was yelling out for glue!"
Thankfully, instead, he was rushed to receive emergency dental care. But what a trooper though!
