Where to Spot Bruce Campbell’s Cameo in EVIL DEAD BURN
One of the things Evil Dead fans love almost as much as the Deadites themselves is hunting for hidden references. Ever since Sam Raimi tucked little nods to other horror movies into the original The Evil Dead, the franchise has embraced Easter eggs as part of its DNA.
Evil Dead Burn keeps that tradition alive, and if you're hoping to catch a Bruce Campbell appearance, you'll want to pay close attention because you'll only have a moment to spot him.
When the original The Evil Dead hit theaters in 1981, horror fans were treated to one of the genre's coolest hidden details. Tucked away in the cabin cellar, alongside Professor Knowby's research, was a torn poster for The Hills Have Eyes. It was a playful jab suggesting The Evil Dead pushed horror even further than Wes Craven's film.
Craven answered back in A Nightmare on Elm Street by having a character watch The Evil Dead on television, complete with a yawn for good measure. Raimi kept the friendly exchange alive by sneaking Freddy Krueger's glove into Evil Dead II. It became one of horror's most entertaining ongoing inside jokes.
Fast forward to today, and the Evil Dead franchise has grown into a horror powerhouse with six feature films, three seasons of Ash vs Evil Dead, and several video games.
Evil Dead Burn celebrates that legacy by weaving in connections to every previous film while packing the movie with fun callbacks longtime fans will appreciate.
Of course, the biggest question for many viewers is whether Bruce Campbell shows up. Anyone expecting Ash Williams to burst through the door with a chainsaw hand and boomstick should probably adjust those expectations.
Campbell hasn't physically returned as Ash since the finale of Ash vs Evil Dead in 2018, and his last big-screen appearance was the quick post-credit scene in 2013's Evil Dead. Instead, Evil Dead Burn gives him a much smaller cameo that's incredibly easy to miss.
Roughly halfway through the movie, Grandma Polly rides her motorized chair upstairs through the family home. As she passes a collection of framed family photos, one face stands out.
Sitting on the left side of the screen is none other than Campbell himself, looking directly toward the camera. It's the kind of cameo that's guaranteed to have longtime fans pointing at the screen the second they catch it.
That isn't the only reward waiting for eagle-eyed viewers, either. Since the story follows a family with deep ties to Evil Dead mythology, the film slips in several other references throughout the house.
Fans can spot a sketch of the Necronomicon from Evil Dead (2013), the iconic Kandarian Dagger from Evil Dead II, and later in the film, one of the Deadites delivers the franchise's famous warning: "You'll be dead by dawn."
Campbell has actually been making these smaller appearances for a while now. In 2023's Evil Dead Rise, he had an uncredited voice cameo that could briefly be heard during one scene.
Before that, he popped up in the post-credit stinger for Fede Álvarez's Evil Dead, appearing just long enough to say, "Groovy" before the screen cut to black.
While fans continue to hope for one more live-action return as Ash, Campbell has made it clear that, if the character comes back, it'll likely be in animated form. An Ash vs Evil Dead animated series has reportedly been in development, but there's still no word on when, or if, it'll finally make its way to fans.
Until then, Evil Dead Burn offers a fun little reminder that Campbell is still very much part of the franchise's spirit.
