Who Killed Hal Jordan? LANTERNS Fans Think They’ve Solved the Mystery
Hal Jordan may actually be dead, and Lanterns fans are already building their case against the person who may have killed him.
Episode 6 of HBO’s DC series finally revealed what happened to Kyle Chandler’s Hal following the destruction of Rushville, jumping ahead to 2026 and filling in a pretty miserable decade for the former Green Lantern. With only two episodes left, the big question now is simple: Who killed Hal Jordan?
There are several suspects, but fans think the clues may point to someone much closer to home than Sinestro.
After taking the blame for Rushville’s destruction, Hal spent 10 years in prison. Once released, he returned to the town where pretty much everyone hated him, began a relationship with Sheriff Kerry, played by Kelly Macdonald, and eventually reunited with John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre.
Just hours after seeing John again, Hal was dead. One theory gaining attention puts Noah at the center of the murder. A fan argued: “Noah killed Hal Jordan…football field, didn’t fight back, split up his family and his city…idk he has a good reason.”
The idea gets more interesting when you factor in Noah’s conversations with John about purpose. Some viewers suspect there could be much more going on with the character, including a possible connection to the Manhunters.
Another fan wrote: “With Noah being so prominent and talking about purpose with John, he’s gotta be a secret Manhunter who couldn’t fight his programming and killed Hal.”
That would certainly give Noah a major role in the final stretch of the season, but there’s another suspect the series is practically pointing a giant neon arrow toward: Sinestro.
Guy Gardner, played by Nathan Fillion, revealed that Sinestro, played by Ulrich Thomsen, escaped imprisonment on Oa. Sinestro obviously has history with Hal, so his sudden freedom makes him an immediate suspect.
Maybe a little too immediate. One viewer put it this way: “That ep REALLY wants us to think Sinestro is the one who killed Hal after escaping, but it feels too straightforward for Lanterns.”
That’s the problem with Sinestro as the killer. He makes sense, which could be exactly why fans aren’t buying it.
There’s also the long list of people in Rushville who had every reason to resent Hal. His return wasn’t exactly greeted with a parade, and the anger toward him remained intense after everything the town endured.
Maggie has also landed on the suspect board, mainly because she may have known exactly where Hal was on the night he died. One user said Maggie could be the killer: “The only person I can think of who would know where Hal was that night is Maggie!”
However, the same fan raised a pretty reasonable problem with the idea that an angry Rushville resident simply decided to murder Hal: “If rushville wanted him dead they would’ve done so ages ago.”
Meanwhile, John has found what could be the key to solving the entire Hal Jordan murder mystery. Inside Hal’s storage unit was a mysterious memory cube locked to Hal’s voiceprint. John managed to recover Hal’s old Green Lantern ring, which could allow him to access a “Halogram” and discover whatever Hal left behind.
That gives the final two episodes a nice little ticking clock. John has the ring. He has the cube. Sinestro is loose. Noah is looking increasingly suspicious. Rushville is filled with people who hated Hal.
Somewhere in that mess is the truth about who killed Hal Jordan. The Noah theory might be the most interesting possibility because of how much attention the character has received and the potential Manhunter connection fans have picked up on.
With two episodes of Lanterns remaining, the show has plenty of room to make any of those theories look completely wrong.
