Why Lucasfilm Is Having a Hard Time Getting STAR WARS Films Off the Ground - "No One Can Agree on Anything"
In the years since Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker was released, Lucasfilm has announced several Star Wars projects with several different filmmakers attached to them and none of them have gotten off the ground.
The only movie that managed to make it into production is Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni’s The Mandalorian & Grogu film, which is currently shooting. But there have been so many other projects that haven’t made it that far.
There are currently several Star Wars films in development that overlap characters or timelines. THR points out in a recent report that while these movies are not related “whatever one were to come out first, could, in a domino effect, then impact the ones after it.”
It then points out that James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi movie which will take us back to the dawn of the Jedi, 25,000 years before the events of the original trilogy, and it will focus on the birth of The Force, is an exception.
It also said that some of the directors working on these projects at Lucasfilm are aware of what others are working on, but then there are others who have no idea what anyone else is working on. So, it seems like there’s a bit of a lack of communication.
One studio insider explained: “It’s a different way of development. There’s so much parallel work going on.”
As we all know, George Lucas’ Star Wars films are considered to be the Old Testament of the franchise, and as the report points out, “nothing has been codified or been made more canonical in modern times than those three movies.”
One source at Lucasfilm talked about that saying: “You’re being asked to create the new New Testament, and no one can agree on anything and there’s a lot of second guessing about meanings.”
Another source familiar with the process is more business-minded, noting, “Star Wars is a nostalgia-based enterprise and they are running out of ways to create nostalgia.”
Yeah, it seems like it’s quite a mess over at Lucasfilm and the reason they can’t get anything off the ground is because no one can agree on anything! These guys just need to get their shit together and figure out a plan to move forward with the movie side of things.
Seriously, there’s no reason why Lucasfilm shouldn’t have been releasing awesome Star Wars over the past few years. They just have the wrong people running things.
Another insider adds: “To make standalone movies or continuing the Skywalker Saga in any form is a fundamental question the company faces as it tries to move forward.”
As a long-time fan of Star Wars, it’s not hard for me to see a clear path of where Lucasfilm could take the franchise, I’m sure a lot of fans have their own ideas of where they’d like to see it go. Lucasfilm’s vision is just all over the place, though, and they can’t seem to figure out or agree on how to execute it.
