Will DEADPOOL Open the Door to R-Rated Superhero Films?
R-rated superhero films are a rare thing to see these days. In the past, films like Blade, Watchmen, and Kick-Ass have made it onto the big screen with an "R" rating, and now there’s Deadpool. With the surge of superhero films that we’ve seen in the past few years, if Deadpool is a success at the box office, it could show studios that there’s a market for these kinds of movies, and maybe it will open the door for more rated “R” superhero movies.
At one of the surprise screenings for the film that happened recently, Ryan Reynolds showed up to talk about the movie and what he hopes comes from it. ComicBook.com was in attendance at one of these screenings and reports that Reynolds said that he hopes it will pave the way for more R-rated superhero films:
"I think it has to [open the door for more R-rated superhero movies], I hope so. There are a lot of superhero movies out there on the market. It’s a genre unto itself. I personally would like to see more rated R ones. I just think it’s time. We’ll see if this holds. Hollywood shamefully copycats every movie that works – so if this does work, you’ll probably see more rated R films!"
Since Marvel is owned by Disney, I know we’ll never see an R-rated version of Iron Man or Captain America. That’s ok, though, because they have their hardcore Netflix series that fans can enjoy. As for what kinds of films we could see happen, Reynolds says that he’d like to see an R-rated X-Force adaptation:
"I don’t think you’re going to see a rated R Avengers movie, but there’s room for other ones. I think there’s room for a rated R X-Force movie!"
That would be awesome to see, and it would be great if it actually happens! But, first things first, Deadpool has to be a success. If it’s not, then we can kiss our hope of seeing an influx of R-rated superhero films goodbye.
The reactions from these special event Deadpool screenings have been glowing, so we know the movie is going to be great! Now people just need to go out and see it when it’s released on February 12th.
