Will Pixar Ever Make an INCREDIBLES 3? Here's What Director Brad Bird Had to Say
Fans waited fourteen long years for Incredibles 2 and it was so damn good that fans, like myself, can't wait for an Incredibles 3! The big question is, will Pixar ever make it? With the sequel being as big of a hit as it is, it seems like a no-brainer to develop a sequel, but what would that sequel entail?
One of the reasons why it took so long for the sequel to get made was because director Brad Bird didn't want to do it unless it had the right story. Well, it turns out that there was so much material developed for Incredibles 2, that some of those elements could easily spill over into a third film. Bird certainly isn't ready to rule out the possibility.
When talking about the pressures of making the film after Disney moved the release date up a year, he told EW:
"You couldn’t linger on. It’s like the episode of I Love Lucy when she’s got the candies piling up on the conveyer belt. This film was like that. They took a year off our schedule, so if an idea didn’t work quickly, you had to just kill the darling and move onto the next. And I killed like a city full of darlings."
The "darlings" that Bird is referring to are all the new superheroes that were introduced in Incredibles 2. We didn't get to see much of them in the film, but the original plan was to really dive into these new characters and several of the stories that Bird wanted to tell got lost in the shuffle. When talking about a possible sequel, he said:
"We storyboarded, and we designed characters, and they’re really good! Some of them were really funny and cool and explored certain things. You know, you never say never, because there might be an opportunity to use it. Maybe the idea shows up in a different film. There was an idea I had for an animated version of The Spirit that I ended up using in The Iron Giant. You never know how these things are going to get repurposed. There were a lot of ideas that we had on this film that could be [used]… whether it’s another Incredibles film, or something else."
So there is a chance that one day there could be a sequel or even possibly a spinoff film, which I think would be interesting. Some of those new supers that were introduced in the sequel were a lot of fun.
Whatever happens, hopefully we don't have to wait another fourteen years for it to happen!
