Will Rian Johnson Take Colin Trevorrow's Place as Director of STAR WARS: EPISODE IX

After the huge news that Lucasfilm has parted ways with yet another director, namely Colin Trevorrow being relieved of duty from Star Wars: Episode IX, many are wondering who could possibly take over.

Insiders tell Deadline Hollywood that you should put The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson at the very top of the short list of directors who might take over. Nothing has officially happened, but that prospect is certainly in the air right now. So far Johnson seems to be the only filmmaker to fit without difficulty into the Lucasfilm machine. His success behind the camera on The Last Jedi seems to now be a great achievement based on the number of directors that have been chewed up and spit out because of “creative differences.”

Trevorrow follows Phil Lord and Chris Miller out the door, who came after Josh Trank was shown the door. And the not-so-exit exit of Gareth Edwards, who completed principal photography on the spinoff Rogue One, but Tony Gilroy was brought on to supervise all the directing of the re-shoots that put Rogue One back on track.

If Johnson does come back to helm Episode IX, it would seem like destiny. He was originally hired to direct two Star Wars films.

Now that Trevorrow is suddenly available, maybe he will step back in and direct the third Jurassic World sequel?
