Will Smith Confirms That Genie Will Be Blue in Disney's Live-Action ALADDIN

Yesterday we got our first look at director Guy Ritchie’s live-action adaptation of Aladdin. A lot of fans of the original animated film were disappointed that Will Smith’s version of Genie wasn’t blue.

Well, the actor offered a confirmation on his Instagram account that he will in fact be blue in the film. He posted the EW cover along with a note that said:

“BAM!! First look at the Genie 🧞‍♂️, Princess Jasmine, and #Aladdin! Check Me Rockin’ the Top Knot Ponytail Vibes in @entertainmentweekly 😆 (and yes, I’m gonna be BLUE! :-) )”

So, what we are seeing of Genie in those photos are not the final look of how he’ll appear in the film. It will be interesting to see how the blue look of Genie will be utilized. Will he literally have blue skin!? Or will he be walking around with a blue-like glow? Here’s a fan’s interpretation:

We’ll just have to wait and see. One thing is for sure, this is going to be a very different version of Genie than what Robin Williams gave us because there’s no way Smith is going to be able to top that. He just has to do his own thing with it. When talking about it, he said:

“I started to feel confident that I could deliver something that was an homage to Robin Williams but was musically different. Just the flavor of the character would be different enough and unique enough that it would be in a different lane, versus trying to compete.”

I’m actually interested to see how Smith brings this character to life. I’m sure that he’ll make it fun.

Aladdin is the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future. Directed by Guy Ritchie, who brings his singular flair for fast-paced, visceral action to the fictitious port city of Agrabah, the film is written by John August and Ritchie based on Disney’s Aladdin.

Aladdin also stars Mena Massoud as the charming scoundrel Aladdin; Naomi Scott as Jasmine, the beautiful, self-determined princess; Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, the powerful sorcerer; Navid Negahban as the Sultan concerned with his daughter’s future; Nasim Pedrad as Dalia, Princess Jasmine’s free-spirited best friend and confidante; Billy Magnussen as the handsome and arrogant suitor Prince Anders; and Numan Acar as Hakim, Jafar’s right-hand man and captain of the palace guards.

The movie will be released on May 24th, 2019.
