Willem Dafoe in Talks To Join Robert Eggers' NOSFERATU Vampire Movie
It looks like Robert Eggers may be reteaming with his The Lighthouse star Willem Dafoe as the actor is in talks to join the director’s next film project, Nosferatu. If officially cast, he will join Lily Rose-Depp, Bill Skarsgard, and Nicholas Hoult who are already on board.
Eggers has been wanting to cast Dafoe in this movie for some time now and when talking about that, he previously said: "Nosferatu is such an incredibly important film and story for me, so it's always percolating. If Willem ... if 'Nosferatu' is made, Willem better damn well be in it because I just love working with him ... but, you know, maybe he would play Ellen? Who knows."
There’s no word on who Dafoe will be playing in the movie, but it won’t be the vampire character, Count Orlok. That character is being played by Skarsgard. This would also be the second Nosferatu film project that Dafoe would be a part of, the first one was that fantastic 2000 horror satire film Shadow of the Vampire. In that movie, he played a fictionalized version of Max Schrek, the actor who played the vampire Count Orlok in the original film.
In this new reimagining, Nosferatu tells the gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman (Depp) in 19th-century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire (Skarsgard) who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him. Focus had no comment on the project.
Eggers has been working on making this film for years. It’s a passion project and he has a long history with the film. When he was in high school, he produced a remake of it for his senior-year project. He actually played Count Orlok in “a scene-for-scene re-creation of the silent film, complete with intertitles and sibling gargoyles.”
F.W. Murnau is the director of the original 1922, while German filmmaker Werner Herzog notably directed his own version of the classic tale back in 1979.
