To celebrate the film's 55th anniversary, Fathom Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures have released a new trailer for the upcoming theatrical rerelease, and for anyone who grew up with Gene Wilder's unforgettable performance as Willy Wonka, it's bound to stir up a lot of emotions.

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory will return to theaters for two special anniversary screenings on August 2 and August 5, 2026. The event will also include a special introduction from renowned film critic and historian Leonard Maltin, making it an even more memorable celebration of this beloved classic.
Directed by Mel Stuart, the 1971 musical fantasy follows Charlie Bucket, a kind-hearted boy growing up in poverty who discovers one of five coveted Golden Tickets hidden inside Wonka chocolate bars.
Along with his Grandpa Joe, Charlie enters the mysterious chocolate factory alongside four other children, where they're surrounded by chocolate rivers, incredible candy inventions, and the unforgettable Oompa Loompas.
As the tour unfolds, each child learns a lesson through the consequences of their actions, while Charlie's honesty and compassion ultimately prove he's worthy of something far greater than he ever expected.
Along with Wilder, the film stars Peter Ostrum, Jack Albertson, Roy Kinnear, Denise Nickerson, and a terrific supporting cast that helped turn the movie into one of the most cherished family films ever made.
What's amazing is that the movie wasn't an immediate box office sensation. During its original 1971 theatrical run, it earned around $5.8 million. It found its audience over the years through television broadcasts and home video, eventually becoming a multi-generational favorite.

Personally, I couldn't be more excited about this rerelease. I've watched Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory hundreds of times over the years. It's one of those comfort movies I can revisit anytime, and it never gets old.
Somehow, though, I've never had the chance to see it in a theater. That's about to change, and I honestly can't think of a better way to experience this film than with a crowd of fans who love it just as much.
Watching Gene Wilder's performance is amazing. His mix of warmth, mystery, humor, and unpredictability is still unmatched, and seeing those iconic moments in a theater is going to be something special.
