WINNIE THE POOH Origin Story Film in the Works at Baboon Animation With IQI Media

A new origin story Winnie the Pooh film is in the works from Baboon Animation and IQI Media. The story will be a prequel to the beloved book series by A.A. Milne. The property was owned by Disney for several decades, but recently went public, allowing for new iterations to be told by different companies.

Mike de Seve (Madagascar, Monsters vs. Aliens) will direct, and co-write with fellow DreamWorks alum John Reynolds (The Mr. Peabody & Sherman Show).

Reynolds said of the project:

“We’re telling the surprising origin story of the silly young bear and his friends, when they were still kids, in a way designed to connect with 21st-century kids.”

Kelly commented:

“A.A. Milne’s bear has aged gracefully in the last hundred years. But what happened, back-when, that made him and his pals who they are in the book? A heck of a big adventure, that’s what – one that needs a big screen. Audiences will be transported to somewhere they never expected.”

Added de Seve:

“I think this unsinkable young cub is totally relatable for today’s kids, with his hell-bent craving for honey and his ludicrous schemes to get it. The whole gang is hilarious, and are even more hilarious as kids, we’re finding out.”

The creators noted the success of reboots like Peter Rabbit and Paddington, so it feels like this should be a good film for fans of the established story. I think it will be a little weird to have a Winnie the Pooh movie that’s not from Disney, but as long as they are true to the origin and fans, I think it will work out. Do you think you’ll check out this new prequel?
