Momentum Pictures has released the first trailer for Witch Hunt, coming to VOD/Digital October 1 starring Gideon Adlon, Abigail Cowen, Christian Camargo, and Elizabeth Mitchell. The movie is set in a modern day America where witches are real and actively hunted down by the government.

In it, we see at least one old method of sussing out a witch by throwing her into water. It was thought that a witch would float because they had rejected baptism and an innocent would sink. Though we see each girl sink, it would appear that the test in this film is designed to see if the witch would use her magic to make her float to the surface before drowning.

It will be interesting to see if the movie decides to incorporate other methods people have used to prove someone was a witch but in a more modern way, I could definitely see a horror movie making use of the prick test in which a victim was poked and scratched with needles searching for a place that was immune to pain and didn’t bleed. Weren’t the witch trials delightful?

At any rate, it looks like it has a mixture of a Harriet Tubman story with Carrie and X-men all rolled into what could be a really good movie. Here’s the official synopsis:

In a modern America where magic is real and witches are persecuted by US authorities, teenager Claire and her family are part of an intricate network that helps these women escape across the border to seek asylum in Mexico. However, when their mode of transport is disrupted by federal witch hunters, trouble befalls the family as they struggle to hide two young witches within the walls of their home. As witch hunters close in and strange magic begins haunting the family, Claire discovers that she may have more in common with these witches than she could have ever imagined.

There’s still a lot of questions I have about the premise, such as why not instead utilize these magic powers for good? Although given the nature of movies like this, there probably is an insidious plot by the government to enslave these witches in order to use them for some shadowy purpose. At any rate, it looks interesting and like it might be a good way to kick off the Halloween season.
