With AVENGERS: ENDGAME Behind Them, The Russo Bros Discuss What it Would Take To Bring Them Back To Marvel Studios
Joe and Anthony Russo had a hell of an awesome run with Marvel Studios and it all accumulated to Avengers: Endgame, which brought an end to The Infinity Saga. The Russos have since signed a big deal with MGM to write, direct, and produce several films for them. But, the question is… will they ever come back for another Marvel movie? If they did, what would they be interested in tackling?
They’ve previously said that they are done with making Marvel movies until Secret Wars rolls around, but there are other stories and characters that could entice them to come back. One thing is for sure, the Russos aren’t done with making big studio blockbuster films. They explained to SyFy Wire that they will be moving between big films and small ones:
“We love that level of filmmaking that Marvel afforded us. We love telling stories on that level, but we’re also fed by smaller stories and more specific stories. So for us moving forward, it’s moving back and forth between the two.”
As for what it would take to get them back into the Marvel fold and direct another Marvel Movie, Joe Russo said:
“I grew on up [John] Byrne’s X-Men run. Ben Grimm was a favorite character growing up, the Thing. And Fantastic Four is now in the Marvel fold. There’s a lot. Silver Surfer is an amazing character. Going really big in cosmic would be a lot of fun. So there’s a lot of things that could attract us.”
Well, there’s no doubt that the fans would be very happy to see the Russos come back to direct a film involving any of these characters! I’d love to see them tackle Fantastic Four! Who knows if it’ll happen, though. The two filmmakers have a lot of projects lined up that they are already attached to in various ways. Joe Russo goes on to tease that they would love to tackle another epic story arc again:
“I think after you go on the journey that we went on –—because there is a comprehensive narrative, an overarching story from Winter Soldier all the way to the end of Endgame that involves Tony and Cap, through Civil War, through Infinity War — I think that scale of ambition in storytelling is a bug that’s bit us. And we’re compelled to tell more stories on that scale, with that sort of years-long ambition to them.”
Well, Marvel is the perfect place for them to do that and Secret Wars would be the perfect story for them to start building. While we don’t know when the Russos will return to Marvel, the filmmakers are confident that it won’t be very long. Joe said:
“Working with Kevin [Feige] and Louis D’Esposito and Victoria Alonzo has been the most rewarding collaboration we’ve had in our entire career. They’re like family to us now. We’re all very, very close to one another, and we miss each other. So I’m sure we’ll find something that we can do together soon.”
Hell, they probably already know what they will be working on! Their next Marvel project may have already been set up! I just can’t wait to see what that will be!
