WONDER MAN Canceled by Disney+ Despite Rave Reviews and Season 2 Renewal
This is one of those Marvel decisions that just doesn’t make any sense. In an era where fans constantly ask studios to make projects with stronger writing, great characters, and stories that actually take creative swings, Wonder Man delivered exactly that.
It earned glowing reviews, built a passionate fanbase, scored an Emmy nomination for Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and was even renewed for a second season earlier this year. Now, in a frustrating turn of events, Disney+ has pulled the plug, and Season 2 isn’t happening after all.
We all know nothing in Hollywood, but it’s still incredibly disappointing to see Wonder Man become another casualty, especially after it looked like the series had a bright future.
Like a lot of other fans, I was excited to see where Simon Williams' story would go next. Abdul-Mateen had even started teasing what might be coming, although he also admitted back in May that he hadn’t yet had any "creative conversations" about the second season.
Looking back now, that may have been an early indication that things weren’t moving as smoothly as everyone hoped. The show had so much promise, though!
According to Variety, “According to sources, a writers’ room for season two was never opened, and the show’s writers have been released to pursue other projects.”
Wonder Man had heart. It had genuinely compelling character arcs, sharp writing, terrific performances, and a story that felt refreshingly different from many of Marvel's recent Disney+ offerings. It balanced humor, emotion, and superhero spectacle in a way that felt natural, making Simon Williams one of the MCU's most interesting new additions.
Honestly, it's hard to understand this decision. If there was ever a Marvel series that deserved another season, this felt like one of them. Fans finally got a show that clicked on multiple levels, and instead of building on that success, Marvel is walking away from it.
But, this may not be the last we've seen of Simon Williams or Trevor Slattery. Ben Kingsley returned once again as Trevor in the series after previously appearing in Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Marvel apparently still has plans for these characters elsewhere.
As Variety explains, “according to an individual with knowledge of the situation, while Wonder Man is not proceeding with season two, the characters featured in the series could still appear in other Marvel projects in the future.”
That’s at least a small silver lining. Simon Williams deserves to remain part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it would be a shame if Marvel completely abandoned everything this show accomplished.
Still, that doesn’t soften the disappointment. Wonder Man was one of the best Marvel Disney+ series. It featured excellent performances across the board, engaging storytelling, meaningful character development, and writing that gave audiences a reason to invest in every episode. It felt like Marvel was finally getting back into a creative groove on television.
Wonder Man showrunner Andrew Guest shared on Instagram, "Marvel has cancelled Wonder Man. So proud of the show we made. So grateful to have worked with [Destin Daniel Cretton], [Yahya Abdul-Mateen II] and Sir Ben Kingsley. [I] want to thank everyone who watched and all the critics who supported us.”
Now that momentum has come to an abrupt end. Hopefully this isn't the last chapter for Simon Williams, because he absolutely deserves another chance.
