WONDER WOMAN 1984 Director Patty Jenkins Debunks Direct-To-Streaming Release Rumors
Rumors have started to pop up online again regarding the release of Wonder Woman 1984. The rumor originated at Giant Freakin Robot with a report saying that the film will be going straight to streaming. I never reported on it, because I knew it was full of crap.
This isn’t the first time we have heard the rumor, and Warner Bros. has previously debunked it with Warner President of Domestic Distribution Jeff Goldstein saying there have not been any streaming discussions, “We’re looking to release the movie theatrically, that’s our plan.” Producer Charles Roven also dismissed the idea of a streaming-only release saying, “It’s ludicrous if you consider how big a movie this is. Everybody recognizes that, as interesting as streaming might be, if you want a huge, global worldwide box office, you’ve got to release it in a movie theater.”
Director Patty Jenkins has now responded to this most recent rumor saying, “Direct to streaming is not even being discussed. We are still 100% behind the theatrical experience for #WW84 and supporting our beloved theater business.”
I know a lot of people would like to see the film released digitally, but that’s just not going to happen. Wonder Woman 1984 was made to be seen on the big screen and fans will get that opportunity on December 25th, 2020.
Jenkins doesn’t want to lose movie theaters and in a recent interview, she fired a warning that the big screen experience is fighting for its life amid continued disruption to the film slate and a lack of support, saying:
“This will not be a reversible process. We could lose movie theater-going forever.”
The story for Wonder Woman 1984 picks up with Diana Prince as she’s working at the Natural History Museum in Washington, D.C. in the 80s, and she’s been living a quiet, lonely life since the events of the first movie. But she’s still just trying to help the people who need it.
The synopsis reads:
In 1984, during the Cold War, Diana comes into conflict with two formidable foes—media businessman Maxwell Lord and friend-turned-enemy Barbara Minerva / Cheetah, while reuniting with her love interest Steve Trevor.
The movie was directed by Patty Jenkins, and it also stars Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Kristen Wiig as The Cheetah, Pedro Pascal as Max Lord, Robin Wright as Antiope, and Connie Nielsen as Hippolyta.
