WORDLE Is Getting a Physical Version with WORDLE: THE PARTY GAME

There is no doubt that Wordle has become a very popular game. It’s created various spin-offs, everyone knows what it is, it’s like Sudoku in the early 2000s. Everyone has at least tried it. But did it need a physical version? That’s the question that Hasbro and New York Times Games apparently decided to answer with “yes.” Hasbro recently announced Wordle: The Party Game which will let people play Wordle “in an all-new way.”

In the physical version, you’ll need two to four players, and it’s recommended that they be at least 14 years old. Then, one player serves as the Wordle Host who writes down a Secret Word. Then, the other one to three players are given six attempts to guess the five-letter Secret Word. The fewer guesses made scores the player fewer points, which means we’re using golf scoring and the person with the fewest points wins the game. That’s right, it’s exactly the same game except one of your friends picks the word and there’s a point system. A fair number of people already do this I thought with the whole “I got it in only three guesses” thing. Am I wrong?

Something I did fail to mention is that players write their guesses on dry-erase boards and are given secretive shields so others don’t see their guesses. To its credit (I guess), Wordle: The Party Game will have four different ways to play: classic, fast, timed, or teams. I have no idea how the latter three work, but it sounds like maybe they’re not that different. Adam Biehl of Hasbro Gaming said:

Since Wordle burst onto the scene, it’s undoubtedly been a staple in social and pop culture vocabulary. We’re beyond thrilled to work with New York Times Games to bring our gaming worlds together and extend Wordle in new ways.

Jonathan Knight at Games for The New York Times added:

Wordle truly brought us all together and that’s what makes it so special. With each daily puzzle, we’re connected with friends and family through social play. At New York Times Games, we’re focused on quality crafted puzzles that everyone can experience together, which is why we’re so excited to team up with Hasbro to bring a fresh new format to the global sensation of Wordle.

I have no problem with Wordle. I enjoy it on occasion, and some of the spin-offs have been a blast. It’s served as a way for some people to come closer together. I do not begrudge it. I just really question the need for Wordle: The Party Game. If this sounds cool to you, I’d love to hear in the comments what stands out to you. It will release this October with an MSRP of $19.99. Pre-orders are now live through Amazon, Hasbro Pulse, and Target. I also imagine you could talk to your friendly local game store and see if they can procure a copy for you while you support local business.
