World Health Organization Now Lists Gaming Disorder as a Health Problem
The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently added “Gaming disorder” to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD). Gaming disorder is considered an addictive behavior disorder similar to Gambling disorder. Here’s WHO’s definition:
The idea is that if someone develops an addiction to gaming, then it’s a problem. This usually requires that gaming become prioritized to such an extreme extent that it is the most important thing to the person, superseding any other interests, relationships, or even personal health.
Of course, many organizations are opposed to the notion with the Entertainment Software Association saying that the classification of Gaming disorder “trivializes real mental health issues like depression and social anxiety disorder.” It should also be noted that there are no laws to back up the ICD.
Personally, my motto is that moderation is key to a lot of things in life. I do wonder if the ICD also includes things like exercise as well, and if not, I’m curious as to why they’re including gaming at this point. In excess, a lot of things can become addictive, and if you see someone start to become addicted, talk to your local professionals for advice.
