A WRINKLE IN TIME Director Ava DuVernay to Helm Jack Kirby's THE NEW GODS Movie

Director Ava DuVarney, who recently directed A Wrinkle in Time, has just landed another big movie gig. She will direct a big screen adaptation of Jack Kirby's DC comic The New Gods. The film is obviously set up at Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment.

DuVarney is a talented director who also directed the wonderful film Selma. I do have to say, though, that I thought A Wrinkle in Time was a mess of a movie. That being said, I'm not sure what to expect from The New Gods. She's made one film that I liked and one film that I didn't. I hope this News Gods film turns out to be awesome, though!

Maybe Warner Bros. is hoping that she will pull off the same kind of magic that Patty Jenkins pulled off with Wonder Woman.

For those of you not familiar with Kirby's New Gods, he created the comic in 1971 after he left Marvel. It is also a freestanding universe that is not really connected to the rest of the DC universe. This whole thing became known as the Fourth World.

It's a sci-fi based mythology that revolves around ancient deities known as the New Gods. "Similar to the gods of Earth lore, the New Gods were larger than life, possessing fantastic powers, which they used in a never-ending struggle between good and evil."

There was a trilogy of comics written and drawn by Kirby that included New Gods, Forever People and Mister Miracle.

The New Gods came into existence after the world of the gods of classic mythology were destroyed during Ragnarok. The deities inhabit two planets: one is New Genesis, a lush paradise, and the other Apokolips, which sounds like Dante’s version of hell. War ensues.

There is a lot of stuff here for DuVernay to dive into and play with. I'm curious to see what she ends up doing with this movie, but again, I hope that she creates something epic that Kirby's fans will love.
