WWE 2K16 - Hell Yeah! Stone Cold Is 2K16 Cover Star

I can't help but hear Stone Cold Steve Austin's theme music as I write this, which is still one of the most iconic themes in the business. While there isn't much to share other than the Texas Rattlesnake's presence on the cover and in the game, there was one interesting tidbit from the press release that I thought was worth sharing.

“I’ve had the privilege of working with 2K to support the WWE 2K franchise, and now I’m absolutely honored to serve as the WWE 2K16 cover Superstar,” said Stone Cold Steve Austin. “No disrespect to the previous and extremely deserving WWE 2K cover Superstars – Dwayne ‘The Rock®’ Johnson and John Cena® – but it’s about time the franchise raised some hell with yours truly on the cover. I look forward to injecting a dose of ‘Texas Rattlesnake’ into this year’s game and overall campaign.”

First thing worth noting is how easily he slips back into character, regardless of how long it's been since he was full time in the ring. Secondly, the line below is what signaled my radar:

I look forward to injecting a dose of 'Texas Rattlesnake' into this year's game and overall campaign.

That part is key. The release goes on to say how involved he has been in the design process, and while my first thought is something along the lines of the 2K Showcase mode a la last year, just all about Stone Cold (which would not be a bad thing at all, mind you), I have another idea.

It has been well documented how Stone Cold had to retire due to wear and tear on his body, and the injuries he had to weather along the way, specifically when it came to his neck. That being the case, while it has been brought up on numerous occasions, I doubt we will ever see him in the ring again for a full-on program. Why not then take this opportunity and do some fantasy booking? Make a Showcase mode that doesn't go over Steve's past, but rather what it would look like if he were in the WWE today. It would give creative a chance to write a story with a definitive start, middle, and end, and bring every dream matchup to life in a way that can't be done in real life. Have Stone Cold giving a stunner to Kevin Owens, or book a fight over the company alongside stars like John Cena, Dolph Ziggler, and Roman Reigns. Have him hop in a tag team bout with Cesaro, or have him take on the beast himself Brock Lesnar in a lengthy dream program. The possibilities are endless, and it would be completely original content.

They have covered the Attitude era extensively in past games, and have dived deeply into Wrestlemania's past as well, so this might be a unique way to continue to use WWE legends and greats in new creative ways. Whether that happens or not is anybody's guess, but in the meantime we would love to hear your thoughts!
