X-MEN '97 is Getting a Limited-Series Prequel From Marvel Comics
Marvel Comics has announced that X-Men ’97 is getting a new four-issue limited prequel series that will lead into the upcoming Disney+ animated series.
The X-Men ’97 comic book comes from writer Steve Foxe and artist Salva Espín. Created in “close collaboration with the showrunners” of the animated series. The comic will fill fans in on what the X-Men have been up to since the original X-Men animated series came to an end. Marvel Comics also teases “[s]tartling revelations” that “lead directly into the hotly anticipated new series.”
Foxe shared in a statement: “There’s a very good chance I wouldn’t be writing comics today if not for the impact X-Men: The Animated Series had on me as a kid — heck, the voice actors from the show are still the voices I hear when I read the comics today!”
He went on to say: “Getting to reunite with my X-MEN ’92: HOUSE OF XCII collaborator Salva Espín on this official prelude to X-Men ’97 has felt like a bucket-list project a lifetime in the making, and Beau [DeMayo] and the rest of the ’97 team gave us a fantastic runway to come up with our own original tale that feeds right into what viewers will get to experience in the new season.”
X-Men ’97 #1 goes on sale March 27, 2024. As for the animated series, it will be released at some point in 2024. In X-Men ‘97, "Storm and Wolverine try to continue the X-Men. Magneto comes in and wants to step up for Charles Xavier. Sinister comes in to try to end the X-Men once and for all."
The series brings back the original voice cast including Cal Dodd (Wolverine), Lenore Zann (Rogue), George Buza (Beast), Alison Sealy-Smith (Storm), Chris Potter (Gambit), Catherine Disher (Jean Grey), Adrian Hough (Nightcrawler), and Christopher Britton (Minister Sinister).
