X-MEN '97 Season 2 Adds OBSESSION Star Michael Johnston as Nathan Summers

Marvel just dropped the first trailer for X-Men '97 Season 2, and fans are already picking apart every frame looking for clues, cameos, and mutant chaos.

Along with teasing the arrival of new characters like Polaris, Rama-Tut, Danger, and members of the X-Force and X-Factor teams, the trailer also hinted at some major developments tied to the Summers family.

Now we know who’ll be bringing one of those characters to life. Michael Johnston, who recently starred in Obsession, revealed on Instagram that he’s officially joined the cast of X-Men '97 Season 2 as Nathan Summers.

Nathan made his debut during season 1 as the infant son of Scott Summers and Jean Grey before Bishop took the child into the future in an effort to save his life. Comic fans already know where that road leads. Nathan eventually grows up to become the time-traveling mutant warrior Cable.

Season 2 appears ready to have some fun with the timeline chaos introduced in the finale, and that means Cyclops and Jean are expected to cross paths with a teenage version of their son somewhere along the way.

Marvel’s new trailer already teased that the X-Men are scattered across different points in history after the explosive showdown with Bastion.

The team managed to stop Asteroid M from wiping out Earth, but the victory came with a pretty massive consequence. Several heroes were thrown through time, with some ending up in the distant past where they encountered a younger En Sabah Nur.

The setup points toward Apocalypse stepping into the spotlight next season, and there’s already speculation that Gambit could return as one of his Horsemen after the emotional events of season 1.

The official synopsis for Season 2 reads: X-Men ’97 Season 2 continues with the heroic mutant team of X-Men, divided and thrown across different eras in time as they struggle to navigate their return home. Meanwhile, back in the 1990s, suspicious foes and new strains of mutant intolerance are on the rise in the wake of the X-Men’s absence.”

The upcoming season will consist of nine episodes and features a returning voice cast that includes Ross Marquand as Professor X, Matthew Waterson as Magneto, Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, and George Buza as Beast.

Marvel still hasn’t officially confirmed the voices for several newly introduced characters.

The series is executive produced by Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, Julia Lewald, Eric Lewald, Larry Houston, and Beau DeMayo.

Jake Castorena serves as supervising producer, with episodes written by JB Ballard, Beau DeMayo, Bailey Moore, Antony Sellitti, Brian Ford Sullivan, and Mariah Wilson. Emmett Yonemura and Chase Conley direct the season’s episodes.

X-Men '97 Season 2 premieres on Disney+ on July 1.
