X-Men Costumes for AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Revealed at D23 as Mysterious Countdown Clock Change Sparks Speculation
The clock is ticking toward Avengers: Doomsday, and Marvel fans have found another reason to stare at that countdown a little more closely.
With D23 underway and rumors swirling about ticket sales and possible new footage, the official YouTube countdown for the upcoming Marvel Studios event movie has undergone a small but interesting change.
At the same time, D23 attendees have gotten an up-close look at the new costumes for Nightcrawler and Mystique, giving us the clearest view yet of their comic-inspired designs.
Things could get even more interesting before the day is over. Tickets for Avengers: Doomsday are rumored to go on sale today, although exactly when that might happen remains unclear.
They could become available imminently, or Marvel and Disney may be saving the announcement for tonight's D23 presentation in Anaheim.
These are also expected to be global ticket sales rather than something limited to the U.S.-based "Infinity Vision" screenings. That opens the door to another possibility: Marvel Studios could use the Disney Showcase panel to debut new footage and announce that general ticket sales will begin early next week.
With the Disney Showcase panel not starting until 7pm PT tonight, we are in for a late night, and I’ll be covering the event, so stay tuned for big news dropping later this evening.
While everyone waits, some eagle-eyed Marvel fans spotted something different about the Avengers: Doomsday countdown clock on YouTube. A mysterious light is now shining through the Avengers "A" logo.
It's a tiny adjustment, but Marvel fans know better than to completely ignore changes like this. The previous time the countdown received an update, it happened shortly before the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer was officially released. That naturally has people wondering whether Marvel is preparing to drop another preview.
For now, the actual countdown numbers haven't changed. They previously switched colors, but they're still displaying the same numbers. If those suddenly shift as D23 gets underway, things could get very interesting very quickly.
Should Marvel release a new Avengers: Doomsday sneak peek, there's a good chance it will be the footage shown exclusively to fans who attended the Marvel Studios Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con last month.
That footage hasn't been officially released to the public, so D23 would certainly be a fitting place to finally put it online.
There's also some cool Doomsday stuff already on the D23 show floor. Marvel Studios has costumes from the movie on display, including the new suits worn by Nightcrawler and Mystique.
Both characters have already appeared wearing these looks in the trailers, but seeing the actual costumes provides our best look so far at how heavily the designs lean into their comic book roots.
The movie is pulling characters from very different corners of Marvel history into one massive story, and the X-Men are clearly going to look the part when they arrive.
Avengers: Doomsday will throw beloved heroes from three distinct universes onto a deadly collision course as they confront an existential threat unlike anything they've faced before.
Between the mysterious countdown adjustment, the possibility of another trailer, global ticket-sale rumors, and those new X-Men costumes sitting on the D23 floor, Marvel has given fans plenty to keep an eye on.
Now we wait to see whether that glowing Avengers logo really is teasing something bigger. Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters December 18.
