X-MEN Reboot Director Jake Schreier Teases Marvel Studios’ Bigger Mutant Game Plan

Marvel Studios is gearing up to bring mutants into the spotlight in a major way, and it sounds like the upcoming X-Men reboot is just the beginning. Director Jake Schreier has opened up about the studio’s long-term thinking, hinting that while the focus is on getting this first film right, there’s already a bigger roadmap quietly taking shape.

The MCU’s next major era will most lilkely revolve around mutants, especially once Avengers: Secret Wars wraps up the current Multiverse Saga. The expectation is that the franchise will shift gears into something many are already calling the “Mutant Saga,” with X-Men leading the charge into a new chapter.

Schreier recently spoke about how Marvel is approaching this reboot, and while he made it clear the priority is delivering a strong standalone story, he also confirmed that bigger conversations are happening behind the scenes.

"I think that, obviously, first things first: We have to make one great movie. But we always have an eye as we’re talking about it, too. What are the different places this can go? What are the places that [have] been in the comics? What hasn’t been explored as much, and how can that be incorporated?"

That mindset seems like response to some of the issues fans had with the Multiverse Saga. The MCU expanded fast, introducing a wave of characters and storylines that didn’t always connect in satisfying ways.

Crossovers became rare, and certain plot threads were left hanging. This time around, it sounds like Marvel wants a clearer sense of direction, especially with something as massive as the X-Men.

Schreier continued to tease the creative discussions happening as the team maps things out:

"And what are some of the different avenues that we could take that feel like the kind of less-trodden path that we could go down? But those ideas are always out there, as we have the discussions."

That idea of exploring less familiar territory is especially interesting. The X-Men comics are packed with wild storylines, obscure characters, and team spin-offs that have barely been touched on screen.

It opens the door for projects beyond the core team, whether that means something like X-Force, Excalibur, or character-focused stories built around fan favorites like Wolverine.

At the same time, Marvel is making sure the creative team is dialed in. Schreier is working with Lee Sung Jin, the creator of Beef, and Joanna Calo, co-showrunner of The Bear, who are currently rewriting a script originally written by Michael Lesslie.

As for what we might actually see in the reboot, rumors continue to swirl. Villains like Mister Sinister and Apocalypse have been mentioned, and the team lineup could include Cyclops and Jean Grey stepping up as leaders, joined by Angel, Beast, Gambit, Rogue, Kitty Pryde, and Nightcrawler.

Before all of that kicks off, though, mutants will reportedly make their presence known in Avengers: Doomsday. That film is expected to bring back actors from the original 20th Century Fox X-Men movies, finally folding those characters into the MCU.

For now, everything hinges on that first X-Men movie landing the way it needs to. But based on what Schreier is saying, Marvel Studios is looking to build toward something big, and if they stick the landing, mutants could end up redefining the MCU for years to come.
