Young Alfred Pennyworth and Thomas Wayne Have Been Cast in The PENNYWORTH Series and New Details Revealed

That Batman-spired Alfred Pennyworth series that Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller has been developing, Pennyworth, is moving forward and two actors have been cast in the lead roles. Jack Bannon (The Imitation Game) is the actor set to take on the role of a much younger Alfred and Ben Aldridge (Our Girl) will take on the role of Thomas Wayne.

Pennyworth follows Bruce Wayne’s legendary butler, Alfred Pennyworth, a former British SAS soldier in his 20’s, who forms a security company and goes to work with a young billionaire, Thomas Wayne, who’s not yet Bruce’s father, in 1960s London. These characters were created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane. Here’s a description of the title character that was provided:

Bannon’s Pennyworth is a boyishly handsome, cheerful, charming, clever young man from London. Honest, open-faced and witty; you’d never take him for an SAS killer. Alfred doesn’t know how to reconcile the kind-hearted boy he used to be with the cold, calculated killer he was forced to become. He’s a man on the make, who doesn’t know what to make of himself yet.

I’m actually pretty excited for this show as it will tell an origin story for a fan-favorite Batman character that’s never really been explored before. Thanks to a previous report, we have some additional details on the series to share with you:

The series will find Alfred in London in his mid-20s in trying to find his way in the world. A former SAS member who ran highly classified missions for the British government, Alfred is trying to reconcile the kind-hearted boy he once was with the ruthless killer he was forced to become. Then series will see him try to reconcile his new age ambitions with the expectations of his father, a proud, stubborn and capable butler known as Mr. P, who, along with his wife, has spent his life in service of a wealthy family and hoped his son would do the same.

Some light is then shed on the major role Bruce's father Thomas Wayne will have in the series:

Alfred will find himself allied with Thomas through his work for a private security company when Thomas arrives in London in search of his sister, Patricia.. The two will be contemporaries, and the 20-something Wayne is said to be intelligent, deeply moral and idealistic, characteristics that Alfred will come to instill in Thomas’s orphaned son.

It was also revealed that Alfred and Thomas will be joined by two other main characters on their journey and that adventure will involve taking on the villainous Raven Society:

The series will see Alfred, Thomas and two of Alfred’s closest friends, Trinidadian Marcus “Bazza” Barrington and Scotsman Wallace “Dave Boy” MacDuff, take on the villainous Raven Society. Led by the mysterious Lord Hardwood and his sadistic henchwoman, Bet Sykes, the Raven Society will find themselves in what sounds like a season long game of cat-and-mouse with our heroes after Sykes abducts a dancer by the name of Esme Whitaker. The heroes will battle Hardwood and the corrupt London police force in an effort to rescue Whitaker and will have to come to trust one another to do so, setting the table for one of comics’ greatest relationships.

The 10-episode series is being produced by Warner Bros. TV and it will start shooting on October 22nd at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK. Pennyworth will premiere on Epix but there’s no specific date set yet.
