YouTuber Ray Mona Uncovers and Shares the Pilot Episode for the American SAILOR MOON Series

Apparently, there’s a legend of 90s anime that I somehow knew nothing about. Back in the early 90s, ToonMakers and Renaissance Atlantic Entertainment (the team behind the original Power Rangers) aimed to make an American version of Sailor Moon that has since been dubbed Saban Moon. Keep in mind that this was before the DiC dub of Sailor Moon was brought to Western Audiences. Saban Moon was known as a failed project that never aired outside of a brief music video at an anime convention. It was believed that’s all there was to it. However, YouTuber Ray Mona recently uncovered and shared the pilot episode in a two-part series in her Tales of the Lost videos.

What we’ve learned is that this show is bonkers! It was a blend of animation and live-action which is a trip in and of itself, but then the animation looks like it’s from the 1970s and the acting was not fantastic. I will say that I do like the representation among the characters. However, I’m very glad that my introduction to Sailor Moon was not this project. I’ve included both videos for Mona’s documentary project below and it’s worth watching both parts. You can find the pilot at about the 1:43:48 mark of the second video though if you must skip ahead.
