YU-GI-OH! is Bringing Gate Guardian and Black Luster Soldier Back in MAZE OF MEMORIES Set Next Year

Konami has announced a new set for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game (TCG) that I am pumped for! The new set is called Maze of Memories and will include what appears to be some retrains of popular monsters from the anime, several World Premiere cards, and reprints of some powerful competitive cards.

I’m most excited for Black Luster Soldier – Legendary Swordsman. Black Luster Soldier is my favorite card and so anytime it gets a retrain or support I get very excited. Based on the entry on Yugipedia, it’s going to be one heck of a card. I’m not sure if it’ll be competitive, but you never know, right? Basically, you can skip your normal draw to add a Ritual Spell to your hand from your Deck; your opponent can’t activate cards or effects during your Battle Phase; and if it was Ritual Summoned with a Normal Monster, attacks, and destroys an opponent’s monster, all of your opponent’s cards go back to their Deck which will really set them back. It sounds really good, but we’ll see if it’s able to make it in the meta.

Another reason I’m extremely excited is that the new World Premiere cards will be bringing Gate Guardian back! It looks like new Fusions based on Kazejin, Suijin, and Sanga of the Thunder will be released, and I imagine this includes a retrain of Gate Guardian that actually does something. I love Gate Guardian from the anime, but they really did him dirty in the TCG by making him a very hard to summon vanilla. Sure, he had 3750 ATK, but it was pretty easily dealt with in the weird scenario where it got summoned.

We don’t know all of the reprints coming in Maze of Memories, but we know one: Baronne De Fleur. This Synchro Monster received some competitive play I believe and this will mark its first reprint.

Other cards coming in Maze of Memories include the Duel Academy Field Spell and Accel Synchro Stardust Dragon. There will be 67 total cards in the set and each pack (MSRP $4.49 each) will contain 1 Foil and 6 Rares. You can enjoy Maze of Memories when it launches on March 10, 2023 and find the rarity breakdown below. What are you most excited about with this set?

  • 42 Rares
