Zachary Quinto Still Hopeful STAR TREK 4 Will Happen and Explains Why He Thinks the Project Is Stalled

Paramount Pictures and producer J.J. Abrams have been trying to get Star Trek 4 off the ground for over seven years, and for some reason, they just can’t get their shit together. It’s so crazy that they haven’t managed to get another Star Trek film made because they all want it to happen! But, the project had been plagued with issues and there have been several starts and stops.

While we’ve been waiting for something to happen with this new Star Trek movie, fans have been enjoying the great Star Trek shows that have been developed for Paramount+. During a recent Q&A at the 57-Year Mission convention in Las Vegas, Zachary Quinto was asked by a fan if he believed the streaming Star Trek shows on Paramount+ were the reason Paramount hasn’t moved forward on another Star Trek film. Quinto said:

“I don’t think that has anything to do with it. Actually, I think the more there is, the more it gets people excited about what could be.”

Quinto then went on to give his opinion on why he thinks the Star Trek film franchise hasn’t moved forward, saying:

“I think there’s a lot of other stuff, creative things. It’s complicated. The fact that anything good gets made is kind of miracle. I think it’s about different people having different agendas and ideas about what it will be. And I don’t know if and when it will happen… And if coalesces again and we come back and we’re able to do it, wonderful. If not, we had a great run.”

The most recent version of the film was announced in 2022, and Star Trek director and producer Abrams shared at the time: “We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new Star Trek film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast and some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting and help take Star Trek into areas that you’ve just never seen before.”

Matt Shakman (WandaVision) was set to direct the film, but he ended up dropping out to develop Marvel’s Fantastic Four. The was then removed from Paramount’s release schedule.

Abrams later offered an update on the film saying that he still hasn’t found a new director for the movie, but added that “it’s the first time [since the original reboot] that we have a story that feels as compelling as the first one.”

I’m sure that one day we will get a new Star Trek movie, but it’s not going to happen anytime soon, especially with the ongoing strikes.
