Zack Snyder Explains That ARMY OF THE DEAD is "Genre-Destorying In a Great Way"
While Zack Snyder continues his work on Justice League, he’s got another film coming out soon that he’s been working on for Netflix titled Army of the Dead.
The story for the film follows a group of mercenaries into a zombie-infested Las Vegas as they try to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted. It’s set amid “a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, during which a man assembles a group of mercenaries to take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantined zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted.“
During a recent interview with Grace Randolph, Snyder talked about the film a little bit, saying, “The movie is bonkers but in a great way, I’m super happy with what we did and just how like genre-destroying it is, in a great way.”
I’m curious to know what he exactly means by “genre-destroying”. It’s definitely a buzz phrase to get fans pumped up for what’s to come. Over the years we’ve seen a lot of zombie projects made, so it would be nice to see something that is different from the norm.
Snyder went on to talk about the zombies in the film, saying, “they’re very practical,” but added that “there’s a couple wide shots where there’s like an army, like a Lord of the Rings style zombie horde…there’s some digital zombies there but 99.9% of them are just like, you know, scary, ass-kicking zombies…You know I like that kind of zombie.”
Sounds good to me! Sounds like we are going to get an epic zombie film from Snyder and that it’s going to be filled with lots of action and scary-ass zombies. I’ve got to admit, his comparison to The Lord of the Rings is exciting.
We know that this thing is going to be filled with awesome visuals. But hopefully the story and script is equally as solid. Snyder created the story for the film and when previously talking about the project, he said:
“I love to honor canon and the works of art, but this is the opportunity to find a purely joyful way to express myself though a genre. It will be the most kick-ass, self-aware — but not in a wink-to-the-camera way — balls-to-the-wall zombie freakshow that anyone has ever seen. No one’s ever let me completely loose [like this].”
He went on to say:
“I love big action, I love big sequences. My movie brain starts clicking around and I was like, ‘We need to be shooting this now!’ Constructing these sequences really fired me up.
“When the movie gets super big, you get pushed away from the camera. And in the last few years I’ve had a reconnection with photography. This movie will be a chance to get the camera in hand."
The cast for the film includes Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Ana De La Reguera, Theo Rossi, Huma Qureshi, Omari Hardwick, Tig Notaro, Hiroyuki Sanada, Garret Dillahunt, Matthias Schweighöfer, Raúl Castillo, Nora Arnezeder, and Samantha Win.
Army of the Dead will be released on Netflix sometime in 2021.
