Zack Snyder Reflects on Four Years of the JUSTICE LEAGUE Snyder Cut
It’s been four years since Zack Snyder’s Justice League, better known as the Snyder Cut, finally saw the light of day. Originally released on March 18, 2021, the four-hour epic was the result of one of the most passionate fan campaigns in modern cinema, and Snyder still seems in awe that it even happened.
Snyder reflected on this, sharing on X on the anniversary of its release: "It's been 4 years. Still humbled by the fact that this exists at all. Big thanks to all of you that made it happen. If you have a spare 4 hours, go give it a watch on @StreamOnMax.”
For those who followed the saga, the Snyder Cut’s journey to existence was a Hollywood anomaly. After stepping away from the original Justice League in 2017 due to a personal tragedy, Snyder’s vision was abandoned, and Joss Whedon was brought in to reshape the film.
The result was a version that felt disconnected from Snyder’s signature storytelling and left fans demanding the release of his original cut.
Their persistence paid off. In 2021, HBO Max gave Snyder the opportunity to restore his vision, delivering a vastly different film that was darker, more expansive, and packed with storylines that never made the theatrical release.
It even came with a brand-new post-credits scene, further teasing what could have been in Snyder’s DC universe had he been given the opportunity to continue with his vision.
However, while the Snyder Cut was a victory for fans, it also marked the end of an era. Calls to "Restore the SnyderVerse", a push for sequels and projects like Ben Affleck’s scrapped Batman movie, never gained traction with Warner Bros.
Instead, DC has moved in a different direction, with Matt Reeves taking the reins on The Batman and James Gunn overseeing a full reboot of the DCU.
As for Snyder, he’s been keeping busy developing projects for Netflix like Rebel Moon and Army of the Dead. It’s still pretty crazy to think about how a fan campaign helped make the Snyder Cut happen.
