Zack Snyder Says Ben Affleck Is the Best Bruce Wayne and He’s Not Backing Down

It’s been 10 years since Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hit theaters, and biggest talking points is still Ben Affleck as Batman. Love it or hate it, the casting sparked endless conversations across the DC fandom.

Now, Zack Snyder is revisiting that decision and making it crystal clear where he stands. In his mind, Affleck is the best Bruce Wayne.

During a recent appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast celebrating the anniversary of Batman v Superman, Snyder reflected on how he landed on Affleck for the role, and the origin story of that casting choice is surprisingly simple.

“I did a drawing where I took Ben’s face, and I put the cowl on it,” Snyder said. “I know it sounds dumb, but I literally took a Sharpie and drew the cowl on top of some photocopy of Ben’s face. I guess I convinced myself in that moment that was the way.”

That rough sketch apparently flipped a switch. Once Snyder saw it, he couldn’t unsee it. Affleck wasn’t just an interesting option. He was the guy.

For Snyder, the key wasn’t only how Affleck would look under the cowl. It was how he carried himself as Gotham’s billionaire socialite. That distinction matters. Batman is one thing. Bruce Wayne is another.

“He’s the most obvious Bruce Wayne, I think, of all the Batmans,” Snyder explained. “Of anybody who’s played Batman, Ben is the best Bruce Wayne.”

That’s a strong statement considering the legacy of actors who’ve worn the cape. But Snyder clearly believes Affleck embodied the polished, powerful presence of Bruce Wayne in a way that stood apart.

Of course, the physical side of Batman was just as important to him. When Snyder envisioned his version of the Dark Knight, he didn’t want a sleek ninja. He wanted a tank.

“He’s also all the things I like in a Batman. He’s legitimately a big dude, right? He’s 6’5” with his boots on,” Snyder explained.

“He’s got that physicality that I always longed for in my cinematic Batman. I’ve always wanted him to be a brawler. I needed that. Even with what I did with the body and the suit and everything, I wanted him thick. I just wanted him to really be able to hurt you.”

That philosophy shaped the brutal warehouse fight scene in Batman v Superman, which many fans still point to as one of the most savage live-action Batman sequences ever put on screen. This wasn’t a graceful martial artist dancing around goons. This was a seasoned, angry veteran who looked like he could break bones with every punch.

But even after Snyder was convinced, there was still one big hurdle, and that was getting Affleck to say yes.

“It did take convincing,” Snyder noted. “But once I was locked in on it, and I had those few lunches and conversations with Ben, I felt like he understood that I cared deeply about what I kind of graphically wanted Batman to be, and I think he saw that and was like, ‘All right, F— it. Let’s do it.’”

And just like that, a new Dark Knight was born.

Affleck’s run as Batman continued through Justice League and later Zack Snyder’s Justice League, cementing his place in DC movie history. Whether fans rank him at the top or somewhere in the middle, there’s no denying that his version of Bruce Wayne had a distinct presence. He felt older. Worn down. Dangerous.

Personally, I loved Affleck as Batman! It was great casting and I would’ve loved to see him get to make his standalone Batman film.

Snyder clearly hasn’t second-guessed that call. A decade later, he’s still riding for his Batman.

Where do you land on the debate? Is Affleck your favorite Bruce Wayne, or do you think another actor owns that title?
