Zack Snyder Says Fans Surprised by Batman Killing People Need to "Wake The F**k Up"
One of the big controversies surrounding Ben Affleck’s Batman, when he was introduced in Batman v Superman, was the fact that he went around killing criminals. After all, Batman had a no killing rule in the comics.
During a recent Q&A with the director, he talked about this aspect of Affleck’s Batman and the way he handled the character, and he was surprised that fans had an issue with it saying:
"Someone says to me: [Ben Affleck’s] Batman killed a guy. I’m like, ‘fuck, really? Wake the fuck up.'"
I guess you can’t get much more of a blunt response than that! He went on to elaborate, explaining why he took Batman down a darker road:
"I guess that’s what I’m saying. Once you've lost your virginity to this fucking movie and then you come and say to me something about like ‘my superhero wouldn’t do that.' I’m like ‘Are you serious?’ I’m like down the fucking road on that."
"It’s a cool point of view to be like ‘my heroes are still innocent. My heroes didn't fucking lie to America. My heroes didn't embezzle money from their corporations. My heroes didn't commit any atrocities.' That’s cool. But you’re living in a fucking dream world."
That’s certainly an interesting point of view, and I see the point he is making. While Batman is one of my favorite superhero characters, I never had any issues with Batman killing criminals. I actually like Affleck’s version of the character.
In the world we live in today, it does feel somewhat naive to think that superheroes like Batman wouldn't have to take drastic measures to stop villains from doing their horrible deeds.
What do you think about what Snyder had to say about his darker version of Batman?
