Zack Snyder Says He Has Superhero Movie Fatigue and He's "Not Knocking on James Gunn's Door"
Man of Steel and Batman v Superman director Zack Snyder has once again offered up his thoughts on superhero movie fatigue and says you won’t find him asking James Gunn to direct one of those DC movies.
The superhero movie genre is not in a good place right now. Marvel Studios was on to something at one point, but after they closed out The Infinity Saga, things got away from them. Most fans blame the whole quantity over quality thing. The storytelling, writing, filmmaking, and VFX has suffered because of it.
Both Marvel and DC have suffered disappointing box office runs this year, which is proof that Audiences are tired of seeing the usual comic book movie formula over and over again. No one is thinking outside of the box anymore.
The Atlantic recently published a new piece on director Zack Snyder, and the divisive filmmaker was asked about the current state of the superhero genre. In answer to that question, he said: “I have the same fatigue” and described these comic book films as “a cul-de-sac,” which are no longer capable of telling self-contained stories. “No one thinks they’re going to a one-off superhero movie.”
There’s nothing wrong with making a one-off superhero movie! But, these days everything has to be connected to this huge cinematic universe! Todd Philips’ The Joker broke out of that and it was a standalone film that was a huge success. It was because it was unique, the film did something very different and audiences wanted something like that to come along. They still do!
Snyder went on to say that he’s not looking at making any superhero films anytime soon, saying: “I’m not knocking on James Gunn’s door, going, like, ‘Bro, shoot me one of those sweet movies.’ The holy grail is some original IP that you create, that has resonance and is cool.”
That’s one thing that I appreciate about Snyder, that he is creating original content based on his own ideas. Even if you don’t like what he’s making, you have to give the guy credit for doing that. I always talk about wanting to see directors and studios put effort into making original content, so what Snyder is doing with his current work is really cool. He’s building original IP, while everyone else is rebooting and remaking the same stuff over and over again with the same characters.
