Zack Snyder Says the Snyderverse Could Return in a Comic or Animated Film: “We live in a world where all that's possible”
The Snyderverse may have wrapped up on the big screen, but that doesn’t mean it’s buried for good. Zack Snyder recently opened up about the possibility of continuing his DC story in another format, and it sounds like he hasn’t ruled anything out. In fact, he seems pretty open to getting creative with it.
For a lot of fans, Zack Snyder's Justice League marked both a victory and an ending. After years of campaigning, the Snyder Cut finally arrived and delivered the director’s full vision. But it also teased a larger arc that was clearly building toward something bigger.
Snyder had long talked about plans for Justice League 2 and Justice League 3, which fueled the Restore the Snyderverse movement even after the film’s release.
While appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Snyder was asked if he’d ever considered continuing that story through animation or a comic book. He responded:
"We've absolutely talked about it quite a bit, and sure. Yeah, I mean, we live in a world where all that's possible. Whatever form it would take, Broadway musical – that would be amazing."
A Broadway version of the Knightmare timeline probably isn’t happening anytime soon, but the fact that conversations have taken place is interesting. DC has a long history with animated adaptations and prestige comic runs, and those formats could easily handle the sprawling, apocalyptic storyline Snyder had mapped out.
Of course, the live-action DC landscape has completely shifted. The old DCEU has officially closed up shop, and James Gunn and Peter Safran are steering the new DCU.
That universe is already rolling forward with projects like Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker Season 2, with Supergirl and Lanterns on the way. The studio is clearly focused on building something new.
Still, that doesn’t mean there isn’t room somewhere else for Snyder to finish what he started.
During the same interview, Snyder also brought up another DC project that still lives in his head. A full adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns remains something he’d jump at if the opportunity came along.
"I'll be 100% honest – I would still make The Dark Knight Returns as a film if that opportunity arose," he shared.
He went on to explain his connection to the iconic comic and how it influenced his work within the DC mythology.
"Yes, did I steal or borrow or homage as much as I could within the context of the mythology that I was creating? Yes. But the thing about The Dark Knight Returns is that it is a closed loop of awesomeness that owes nothing to anything, except for a masterful deconstruction of gods that we all grew up with.”
That’s a pretty direct love letter to the legendary Batman story, and it also highlights how deeply that material shaped his approach to characters like Batman and Superman.
Right now, there’s no official movement toward a Snyderverse comic, animated film, or anything else. But Snyder’s comments make it clear that the door isn’t locked. In an era where multiverses are standard and revivals happen all the time, the idea doesn’t feel impossible.
It would be interesting to see him dive into that world, espeically in the form of animation. I would actually love to see that.
