Zack Snyder Shares BTS Photo of Wayne T. Carr as Green Lantern John Stewart From JUSTICE LEAGUE
As the fifth anniversary of Zack Snyder’s Justice League approaches, Zack Snyder has been digging into the archives and sharing some cool moments from the making of the film.
The director recently posted several behind-the-scenes images from the production, but the latest one is easily the most exciting for DC fans. It offers a brand-new look at actor Wayne T. Carr suited up as Green Lantern John Stewart, a character who almost appeared in the film’s final scene.
Snyder kicked off the anniversary countdown on Instagram with a message reflecting on the film and the legacy it’s built with fans over the past five years.
"Eight days from now we mark the fifth anniversary of Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
Diana: “You said the age of heroes would never come again.” Bruce: “It will. It has to.”
Five years later… and the age of heroes still feels very real."
Along with that post came several images from the movie, including shots of Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Henry Cavill as Clark Kent, and even the first poster created for Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
Then Snyder dropped something fans had been curious about for years: a clear look at Carr in costume as John Stewart.
Carr had actually been cast to play the Green Lantern hero for the director’s cut of Justice League and filmed a brief appearance intended for the film’s closing moments.
The scene would have introduced Stewart as a new player entering the world of Earth’s heroes. However, studio executives ultimately removed the character from the movie before its release. The cameo was replaced by Martian Manhunter in the final version audiences saw.
Sharing the image of Carr, Snyder wrote: "A hero we planned to bring into the Justice League story. Some paths remain unseen… but the green glow is still out there,"
The timing of the reveal has sparked a wave of speculation online. It arrives shortly after the teaser trailer for Lanterns dropped and stirred debate among fans, especially since the preview leaned more into mystery and held back most of the sci-fi superhero elements people expected.
The teaser also briefly showed a Green Lantern suit that some fans compared to the costume Carr wore in Snyder’s planned cameo.
With the anniversary of Zack Snyder’s Justice League only days away, many supporters of the #RestoreTheSnyderVerse movement are hoping the filmmaker might have another surprise in store. Some have even floated the possibility of an Elseworlds continuation of Snyder’s DC story, either on screen or in another format.
At the moment, Snyder’s future with DC remains dead. After James Gunn and Peter Safran launched the new DC Studios and began rebooting the franchise into the DCU, the previous storyline effectively came to an end. Even so, communication between the filmmakers has remained friendly.
Snyder previously shared his thoughts on the new era of DC storytelling and whether he’d ever consider returning.
“You know, I’m a pretty open book. I really feel like, you know, if the characters are treated with reverence, and mythologically correct, then I’m down. I’m in,” Snyder said when asked about the DCU relaunch last year.
“Let’s see what happens. I’m pretty excited. I mean, we’re going to get Superman pretty soon, so we’ll see what that’s like.”
Gunn later confirmed that Snyder had been supportive of the new direction, saying their conversations have continued even after the franchise reset.
“I didn’t, but I knew it already because he’s texted me. He’s been incredibly supportive throughout this process."
For now, the new photo serves as a cool glimpse at what could have been. Carr’s John Stewart may never have officially joined the team in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, but this image proves that the concept was real and much further along than many fans realized.
With the five-year anniversary around the corner, it’ll be interesting to see if Snyder has any more surprises waiting in the wings.
