Zack Snyder Teases an “Awesome” 300 Prequel Series With GAME OF THRONES-Level Ambitions
Zack Snyder has finally offered an update on the long-in-development 300 prequel series, and while he isn’t spilling any major details yet, he sounds pretty excited about where things are headed.
During an appearance on The Preston & Steve Show, Snyder was asked about the project and kept his response frustratingly brief. “I can’t really talk about it,” he explained before describing its current status as “awesome.”
So, no plot details, casting news, or production dates just yet. Still, Snyder’s comments make it clear that the planned return to the world of 300 remains alive.
What seems to interest Snyder most is just how much territory there is to explore beyond King Leonidas and the Battle of Thermopylae. He described the 300 universe as an “incredible” world and floated the possibility of approaching it on a much larger scale.
In fact, Snyder said the prospect of a “Game of Thronesian version of 300” was particularly exciting. That could make for a pretty wild series.
Rather than simply trying to recreate the story and spectacle of the original movie, a prequel could dig into the politics, rival kingdoms, wars, alliances, betrayals, and larger mythology surrounding Sparta and ancient Greece.
Snyder’s original 300 hit theaters in 2007 and became one of the defining movies of his career. Gerard Butler starred as King Leonidas alongside Lena Headey, David Wenham, Dominic West, and Rodrigo Santoro.
Produced for an estimated $65 million, the movie went on to earn more than $456 million worldwide. The success of 300 also helped push Snyder further into blockbuster filmmaking.
He went on to direct Watchmen, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Army of the Dead, and Rebel Moon.
News of another trip into the 300 universe first surfaced in 2024, when Warner Bros. Television began developing a prequel series set before the events of Snyder’s movie.
Snyder was reportedly being eyed to direct and executive produce, with Deborah Snyder and other members of the original creative team potentially involved as well.
Specific story details have remained locked. Early reports only indicated that the series would explore the world before the events of 300, leaving plenty of room for speculation about which characters, conflicts, and periods of Spartan history it could tackle.
Snyder isn’t giving us much more to work with right now, but hearing him call the project “awesome” and talk about expanding 300 into something with a Game of Thrones-sized scope certainly makes the possibilities more interesting.
If that’s actually the direction this series is taking, there’s a lot of potential here.
