Zack Snyder Teases the Future of the ARMY OF THE DEAD Franchise with Time Loops, Portals, and Other Realms

Zack Snyder seems to have some grand and interesting plans for his Army of the Dead franchise. Two films have already been released on Netflix with Army of the Dead and Army of Thieves, but this is just the beginning.

There is also an anime series coming titled Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas and a sequel film titled Planet of the Dead. So, what does Snyder have in store for this universe? Well, he offers a little tease, and it involves time loops, portals, and doorways to other realms. Here’s what the filmmaker shared in an interview with Variety:

"First of all, I know exactly what I'd want to see in the sequel. We're doing the animated series, which will come out next year. The animated series very much delves deeply into the 'why' of the zombie apocalypse and where the zombies come from exactly. I think the time loops, portals, doorways to other realms, things of that nature, are very much in play. So all of those clues that Dieter gives us are very much part of how we continue to spiral out the 'Army of the Dead' universe."

The mention of "time loops, portals, doorways to other realms," is interesting. In Army of the Dead, there’s a moment when the camera focuses on the a couple of skeletons that are wearing familiar clothes, and the character Vanderohe (Omari Hardwick) suggests to Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer) that the skeletons are them and they're caught in a time loop. Maybe there’s some truth to that!

Snyder also goes on to share that he envisions the Army of the Dead universe as a place that will deconstruct genres, saying:

"I love the genre aspect. It's rare, and maybe unprecedented, that there's a cinematic universe where the cinematic part of it is front and center. The deconstruction of different genres is actually part of the way. It's very self-aware. I think that we as an audience and as filmmakers are ready and educated. We're standing by to have fun with the genres we love and deconstruct them, almost from a self-aware cinematic angle, which makes this universe of movies really interesting. It's movies for people who love movies, without letting anyone off the hook as far as the drama and suspense. And I promise there will be zombies."

Sounds like Snyder is having a lot of fun building out this zombie infested universe!
