Zack Snyder’s TWILIGHT OF THE GODS Reportedly Cancelled at Netflix After Season One Cliffhanger

The world of Norse mythology just got hit with some disappointing news. Netflix has reportedly opted not to move forward with a second season of Zack Snyder and Jay Oliva’s animated saga Twilight of the Gods, even though the first season ends with a cliffhanger that practically begs for continuation.

If you were hoping to see the fallout of Loki’s schemes or the full fury of Ragnarök unleashed, it sounds like that won’t be happening at the streamer.

The series wrapped its debut season with a major reveal. Loki is exposed as the hidden manipulator behind the tragedy that pushed Sigrid onto her bloody path, and the death of Baldr sets the ancient dominoes of Ragnarök in motion.

It definitely set up a larger arc, but according to a new report, Netflix has chosen not to greenlight more episodes of Twilight of the Gods. The cancellation reportedly lands it in the same category as Exploding Kittens and the animated reboot of Good Times, which also won’t be continuing.

What’s On Netflix claims the decision came down to performance. The series simply didn’t reach the global viewership Netflix was aiming for. This issue isn’t isolated either, as other Snyder-led projects for the streamer, including future installments in both the Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon universes, are said to be stalling out. Even his previously announced LAPD action thriller is reportedly being shifted to a lower priority.

The eight episode season was created through a collaboration between Snyder’s Stone Quarry Animation and France’s Xilam Animation, with Jay Oliva serving as showrunner and Eric Carrasco as head writer.

The creative team clearly had more stories mapped out. Snyder confirmed that when he previously said, "Yes, there’s a massive roadmap. We know exactly what will happen. It’s just a matter of seeing if there’s an appetite for it."

Twilight of the Gods follows Leif, voiced by Stuart Martin, a mortal king who’s saved on the battlefield by the fierce warrior Sigrid, played by Sylvia Hoeks. Their bond sets the stage for a devastating turn when Thor, voiced by Pilou Asbæk, unleashes terror on their wedding night.

The couple, joined by a crew of hardened crusaders, set off on a brutal quest for vengeance. The story spans mythic realms, vicious combat, and confrontations with gods and monsters as it explores love, loss, revenge, and sacrifice.

Whether the saga may find life elsewhere remains to be seen.
