Zoe Saldana Set to Star in a Pirate Film for Netflix Titled THE BLUFF

Netflix is set to produce a pirate film project titled The Bluff, and Zoe Saldana (Star Trek) is set to star in it. Frank E. Flowers will direct the film from a script that he will write with Joe Ballarini (A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting). This was apparently a hot project that the major streaming services were trying to get their hands on, but Netflix came out the victor.

The project centers around pirates in the Caribbean, but this won’t be like the family-friendly versions of pirates that Disney gave us. This drama is set in the Cayman Islands in the 1800s, and Saldana plays Ercell, “a Caribbean woman whose secret past is revealed when her island is invaded by vicious buccaneers. The intention is to blend visceral action and historical fiction to create a real action vehicle as the heroine fights against the atrocities committed by the pirates.”

It’s explained that there are ”strong roles for a second woman who is part of the vigilante campaign, and the nasty lead pirate.” Anthony Russo and Joe Russo are both on board as producers on the project.

Saldana and Flowers previously teamed in the 2004 drama Haven. Flowers has been working on scripting an untitled LeBron James biopic at Universal as well as a movie about reggae icon Bob Marley for Paramount. Saldana has been busy working on James Cameron’s Avatar sequels and is also filming the untitled David O Russell-directed film.

We don’t see a lot of pirate projects getting made these days. I love pirate stories, so I’m hoping that this movie turns out to be good!
