ZOOTOPIA Officially in the Works at Disney With Ke Huy Quan and Ginnifer Goodwin Returning
Disney is heading back to Zootopia, and after the absolutely massive box office performance of the last movie, nobody should be surprised.
Zootopia 3 is officially in development at Disney following the record-breaking success of Zootopia 2, which pulled in an incredible $1.8 billion worldwide and became Disney’s highest-grossing animated movie of all time.
While details about the next adventure are still being kept under wraps, we already know at least two familiar residents will be returning.
Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan announced the news during Disney’s D23 fan event on Friday, confirming that “the bunny and the snake will be back” for the third movie.
That means Goodwin will once again voice Judy Hopps, while Quan is coming back as Gary De’Snake, the pit viper who played a major role in Zootopia 2.
There’s no official word yet on the rest of the returning cast, but it would be pretty hard to imagine another Zootopia adventure without Nick Wilde along for the ride.
Jason Bateman has voiced Nick since the franchise began with Zootopia in 2016. That movie introduced Judy as an ambitious rabbit police officer trying to prove herself after joining the Zootopia Police Department.
Her investigation eventually forced her to work with Nick, a crafty con artist fox who initially wanted nothing to do with her. Their disfunctional relationship eventually developed into an unlikely partnership as they worked together to unravel a mystery threatening the city.
The original Zootopia became a monster hit for Disney, earning more than $1 billion worldwide. Its success also expanded the franchise beyond the movies with the Disney+ animated series Zootopia+.
Nearly a decade later, Zootopia 2 finally brought Judy and Nick back to the big screen in 2025, but their relationship had changed quite a bit. Nick had joined the police force and officially become Judy’s partner, putting the duo together for another case.
This time, their investigation centered on the mysterious disappearance of Zootopia’s reptile population. Their search eventually brought them together with Gary De’Snake, voiced by Quan, who became an important part of the story and helped them uncover what happened to the city’s missing reptiles.
The sequel also expanded Zootopia with a ridiculous collection of new characters. Fortune Feimster voiced podcasting beaver Nibbles Maplestick, Andy Samberg played Pawbert Lynxley, David Strathairn voiced Milton Lynxley, Macaulay Culkin played Cattrick Lynxley, and Brenda Song took on the role of Kitt Lynxley.
The cast also included Quinta Brunson as Dr. Fuzzby, Robert Irwin as Robert Furwin, and Patrick Warburton as Brian Winddancer, along with plenty of other characters.
Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, Zootopia 2 also earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.
Disney hasn’t announced a release date or directors, but Judy Hopps and Gary De’Snake are officially coming back, and Disney has another Zootopia adventure moving forward.
