'Area 51' film being written

by Joey Paur

Whats funny about this whole thing is when I read the title of the article over at MTV's splash page the first thing that popped into my head was "wouldn't it be funny if this was based on the Area 51 video game in the arcades."

Area 51 is being written by comic book author Grant Morrison and he talks a little about what he is trying to do with 'Area 51'

“It’s a new take on the mythology,” Morrison promised.

Area 51 has been portrayed in movies and TV shows for years but none of them has ever really just focused on 'Area 51'. It is then revealed that this 'Area 51' film is in fact based on the video game by Midway! Most of you I am sure have played this game but here is the basic story run down:

A viral outbreak shuts down a research facility, the scientific and military personnel are locked inside under quarantine, and a small special forces unit led by the hazardous materials division investigates. In the game, the main character from HAZMAT discovers that the mutated virus controls the minds of those infected, as well as an ancient alien colony buried beneath the facility, and he has to solve several mysteries and uncover many conspiracies - including men in black to the Illuminati - to prevent the virus from being released and mutating life on Earth.

Classic. I just find it funny the way Morrison talks about turning this video game into a movie.

"That's the existing idea," Morrison said, "and I have to get to the core of that, dismantle it, and make it work. It'll be a totally different view of the aliens and the whole mythology."

When ever I played the game I never really paid attention to the story or characters. I was the one holding the gun blowing away aliens in Area 51. It will be interesting to see how this ends up. I can only hope it will be fun to watch.

This will pave the way for 'Time Crisis' the movie!
