M. Night Shyamalan considers Unbreakable 2

by Joey Paur

I am not a big fan of M. Night these days. He started off strong then his movies just got worse and worse. But I loved Unbreakable. As soon as it came out on Blu ray I went and got me myself a copy and loved it all over again. That movie is awesome! I remember reading back in the day that it was originally a trilogy. How awesome would that have been! Then it just kind of died off and Night went on to make a bunch of crappy films. In an interview with MTV a sequel to Unbreakable is brought up and here is what he has to say.

"I tell you I get asked about it all the time, so it's not [an idea] I ever forget, I genuinely just asked this question the other day - should I make ‘Unbreakable 2'?

It looks like if he does go through with it he has a star ready and willing to reprise his role. Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price. Jackson says:

"Every time I see [Shyamalan], he says, ‘I've written this thing for you,' so I say, ‘why are you always doing these movies I'm not in?'"

According to both Shyamalan and Jackson, "Unbreakable" was originally intended to be a trilogy, but a series of bad reviews as well as fan and film critic misconception of Shyamalan's work quickly tabled the idea of a possible franchise. As Jackson put it, "He was a victim of what Quentin [Tarrantino] was a victim of. ‘Jackie Brown' is a great movie, but it's not ‘Pulp Fiction 2.' ‘Unbreakable' is a great movie, but it's not ‘I see f**king dead people.'"

I remember those reviews. Everyone wanted to see another Sixth Sense movie. But they got this awesome superhero film that was totally overlooked. If Unbreakable would have been made now, people would have loved it! In a way it was the first "dark" superhero movie grounded in reality.

Likewise, Shyamalan has his own take on the lack of a sequel. "I made the mistake of getting caught up in the hype of the immediate reaction of the movie, which, experience has shown me, is not accurate to any of my movies," he explained. "And If I had been more confident and said ‘I believe in that movie, I love that movie, and I should just go start writing the second one," that would've been the right move. I've still been thinking about it a lot and wonder if it's too late."

It's not to late! In fact the timing is perfect for it! I bet it would be his most successful film since 'The Sixth Sense'. It wont make as much money, but it has the potential to beat out all the other films he has made. So is this sequel going to happen or not?

"I do love the [comic book movie] genre, I just wanna make sure that I'm able to express who I am," explained Shyamalan. "I don't want to get so lost in the subject that I have to neuter everything that's me in it, so maybe ‘Unbreakable' is the comic book thing I should do - I keep coming back to that."

Did you express who you are in 'The Happening'? Because that really sucked. If you keep coming back to it then do it! What is the worst that could happen? It is going to suck? You have continued to make bad movie after bad movie. Why don't you try to make a good movie for a change and do Unbreakable 2. It can't be worse than anything else hes done.
