Jon Favreau won't be Directing THE AVENGERS and He tells you Why

As you know there has been a lot of talk about Jon Favreau directing Marvel's The Avengers film after the success of Iron Man and the set up for the film. We all hoped he would, he even said himself a few times that he hoped it would work out. But according to Favreau unfortunately he won't be directing the film. He's still an executive producer on it though so he will have his hand in the pie.  Here is what Favreau told MTV,

They’ll have to [find a different director], because I’m not going to be available. It’s something I’m being the executive producer on, so I’ll definitely have input and a say.

It’s going to be hard, because I was so involved in creating the world of Iron Man and Iron Man is very much a tech-based hero, and then with ‘Avengers’ you’re going to be introducing some supernatural aspects because of Thor. How you mix the two of those works very well in the comic books, but it’s going to take a lot of thoughtfulness to make that all work and not blow the reality that we’ve created.

In this next statement Favreau makes a very good observation about how he doesn't want to overshadow the other character in the movie with the one he has come to know and love the most.

That’s why it’s good that you have the guys from Marvel like Kevin Feige, who knows the books well and has been involved with the making of all the movies, and he’ll be very involved with ‘Thor’ and ‘Cap,’ You need somebody who has the perspective of all the different franchises to bring them together. I have the myopic vision of just knowing and loving Iron Man.

I can respect his decison not to take on the directing duties for The Avengers, I'm sure Marvel will bring on another great director for the project. They chose Kenneth Branagh for Thor and Joe Johnston for Captain America. I doubt it will be either of these two guys, as awesome as they are.  I'm sure they have someone in mind. The film is due out in 2012, so someone should jump on it soon. I've been surprised and impressed with every Marvel film director announced  so far. So who do you think should come on board to take on The Avengers?
